Description
Ghetsis Harmonia Gropius, commonly known as Ghetsis, masterminds Team Plasma, a faction publicly championing Pokémon liberation while concealing his personal ambition for dominance. His origins involve manipulating Unova’s ancient legends, particularly the tale of twin heroes wielding the dragons Reshiram and Zekrom. Seizing an opportunity, Ghetsis adopts N, a child capable of communicating with Pokémon, and isolates him to cultivate the belief that Pokémon must be liberated from humans. This upbringing positions N as Team Plasma’s symbolic king, enabling Ghetsis to exploit the movement toward his ultimate goal: monopolizing control over Pokémon to establish unchallenged dictatorial rule over Unova.
Ghetsis crafts a public persona of articulate speeches and intellectual persuasion. In Accumula Town, he frames Pokémon liberation as a philosophical imperative for human-Pokémon equality. This façade convinces Team Plasma members and sways Unova citizens, including figures like Gym Leader Burgh, who acknowledge the ethical dilemmas his arguments present. Behind this veneer, Ghetsis harbors profound cruelty and megalomania. He privately brands N "a freak without a human heart" and views Pokémon solely as tools for domination. Hidden aggression surfaces among subordinates who fear his wrath during failures, revealing a volatile temper beneath his calculated oratory.
Strategically avoiding direct combat, Ghetsis relies on manipulation and psychological control. He orchestrates N’s journey to awaken one legendary dragon and defeat Champion Alder, intending to leverage this victory to legitimize mass Pokémon release. Reluctantly, he permits N to involve the player as the "opposing hero," dismissing it as theatrical yet inconsequential. This plan collapses when the player awakens the second dragon and defeats N, prompting Ghetsis to discard all pretense. Enraged, he declares his intent to rule as Unova’s sole Pokémon trainer and attacks the player in the final battle, abandoning his typical avoidance of confrontation.
After his initial defeat and escape via the Shadow Triad, Ghetsis resurfaces two years later mentally deteriorated. Leading Neo Team Plasma, he abandons ideological pretenses and pursues conquest through brute force, aiming to freeze Unova using the legendary Kyurem. At Giant Chasm, he attempts to kill the player with Kyurem’s power, halted only by N’s intervention. Prepared, Ghetsis deploys DNA Splicers to fuse Kyurem with N’s dragon (Reshiram or Zekrom), creating Black Kyurem or White Kyurem. His defeat triggers complete mental collapse; he violently rejects N’s coexistence ideals, leading the Shadow Triad to declare he has "lost control" and remove him. Subsequent reports confirm permanent incapacitation, ending his schemes.
Physically, Ghetsis bears long pale green hair, red eyes, and a red eyepiece over his right eye. Initially, he wears an ornate indigo-and-yellow robe with asymmetrical color blocking, reflecting Team Plasma’s medieval aesthetic and possibly symbolizing dissonant musical intervals (G-Cis). In sequels, his attire shifts to a stark black cloak with eye-patterned designs, and he wields a cane for both support and aggression, mirroring his descent into overt villainy.
Beyond core Unova games, an alternate-reality Ghetsis appears in Team Rainbow Rocket, having succeeded in his original world. There, he seeks to expand dimensional control under Giovanni’s banner but is foiled by the player and warped back. In another instance, he surfaces in Pasio expressing vague remorse, though N rejects his overtures, underscoring their relationship’s enduring damage.
