Description
Headlock is a Decepticon character from the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015). He is a small, older, and somewhat decrepit-looking robot who operates as the cunning manager and trainer for the massive and powerful gladiator known as Groundpounder.
His background lies in the gladiatorial pits of Kaon on Cybertron, where he managed Groundpounder to a status of reigning champion. Their career ended in disgrace when they were accused of cheating, a charge that led to Groundpounder going on a destructive rampage and both being arrested by the Elite Guard. They were subsequently placed in stasis pods aboard the prison ship Alchemor, which later crashed on Earth, freeing them.
Headlock is defined by a pragmatic and ruthless personality centered on winning by any means necessary. He dismisses concepts like fighting dirty or cheating, referring to such tactics simply as winning. He speaks with a coarse, no-nonsense attitude and believes he holds the knowledge necessary for success, claiming that to win, one must listen to him. Despite his small stature, he is confident and manipulative, believing that raw power alone is insufficient and that one must put on a show for the crowd while also knowing and exploiting an enemy's weak points. His primary motivation is victory, and he achieves this through strategy, deception, and sabotage rather than direct combat.
In the story, Headlock acts as the brains of his duo with Groundpounder, who serves as the brawn. After arriving on Earth, they hide out at a construction site outside Crown City. Their role in the plot begins when they discover the Rumbledome, a human monster truck arena. Headlock sees this as a perfect new venue for their talents. He coaches Groundpounder and secretly sabotages their opponents, such as the human competitor Crusher Casey and her vehicle Mechanosaurus. The human arena manager, believing them to be remote-controlled robots, offers them a permanent spot in the show. This scheme draws the attention of the Autobots, specifically the Dinobot Grimlock, who enters the arena to stop them. When Grimlock begins to win, Headlock directly intervenes in the match, using his welding finger to zap and distract the Autobot.
Key relationships define Headlock's role. His most significant bond is with Groundpounder, whom he has managed for a long time and continues to coach on Earth, designing training regimens for him. He acts as a manipulative mentor, and the two are partners in crime. On the opposing side, his primary adversaries are the Autobots Grimlock and Strongarm, as well as the Mini-Con Fixit. Fixit, who was initially a fan of the pair from their gladiator days, is the one who ultimately defeats Headlock in combat after witnessing his cheating firsthand, displaying surprising skill. Strongarm later captures Headlock when he tries to flee.
Regarding development, Headlock shows little change or redemption throughout his appearance. His defeat at the hands of Fixit and subsequent recapture by Strongarm leads to his stasis pod being taken back to Cybertron by Autobots Optimus Prime, Windblade, and Ratchet. He remains a consistent and unrepentant cheater from beginning to end.
In terms of notable abilities, Headlock is not a frontline fighter. His primary skills lie in strategic thinking, manipulation, and technical sabotage. His most distinct offensive ability is a welding finger he can use as a weapon, firing a zap that can distract or injure an opponent from a distance. He also transforms into a forklift, a vehicle mode that reflects his utilitarian and unglamorous nature. Uniquely among many of the Decepticon prisoners from the Alchemor, his design lacks any animal-themed elements in either his robot or alternate mode.
