Description
Overload is a Decepticon from the 2015 animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise, which belongs to the Aligned continuity family. He is a large, heavily built warrior with virtually impenetrable armor and considerable physical strength, and he is distinguished by a theatrical, self-important manner that sets him apart from many of the other escaped Decepticons.
During the war on Cybertron, Overload served as the Decepticons' top spy and saboteur. He operated under various identities and his efforts resulted in the destruction of a number of Autobot installations and the injury of Optimus Prime's rookie scout. Optimus Prime eventually uncovered his activities and stopped him, after which Overload was placed in stasis and stored aboard the prison ship Alchemor. When the Alchemor crash-landed on Earth, his stasis pod was lost, and once he revived he sensed the presence of Optimus Prime and set out to find his old foe.
Personality is central to the character. Overload regards himself as the most daring and dashing Decepticon saboteur and spy that Cybertron has ever known, and he speaks as though he is constantly on stage, using vocabulary drawn from theater and dramatic performance. He is vain, charismatic, and quick-witted, and he sees himself as a lead player rather than a background figure. His vanity is also his greatest weakness, because it can override his better tactical judgment, particularly when he is dealing with Optimus Prime, whom he dismisses as a common or unrefined opponent. His love of his own appearance is so pronounced that a headless illusion created to resemble him was considered especially ironic.
His primary motivation is personal rather than ideological. After escaping from stasis, he deliberately heads toward Crown City, reasoning that he can draw Optimus Prime out by threatening human lives. He wants a confrontation with his old adversary and shows disappointment when he is denied the chance to face Optimus directly, instead being tasked with guarding a captured prisoner. His desire for recognition and his grudge against Optimus drive most of his actions.
In the story, Overload first becomes a major threat in the two-part episode Overloaded. He arrives at the Autobot scrapyard looking for Optimus Prime, finds instead Bumblebee, Strongarm, and Grimlock, and manages to deal with them before moving on to Crown City. Along the way he teams up with the Cyclone Mini-Cons Backtrack and Ransack, and he begins smashing a human vehicle as a warm-up to what he considers his main performance. Bumblebee ultimately convinces the two Mini-Cons to turn against him, and Overload is rendered unconscious and taken back to the scrapyard for storage. Later, after Steeljaw breaks into the scrapyard and deactivates several stasis pods, Overload is freed again as part of an effort to bolster Glowstrike's forces. He joins the gathered Decepticons and becomes one of Steeljaw's remaining followers on Decepticon Island, attending meetings about plans to overthrow Glowstrike and taking part in the conflict there. When the Autobots raid the Decepticon base, Windblade is captured and Overload is assigned to guard her, an assignment he dislikes because he would rather fight Optimus Prime or at least Bumblebee. When Ratchet and Drift arrive to rescue Windblade, he subdues them, but the Mini-Cons Slipstream and Jetstorm slip away and eventually free Windblade and Ratchet, and a decisive blow to Overload's face allows the Autobots to seal him in a stasis pod of his own. That pod is later taken back to Cybertron by Optimus Prime, Windblade, and Ratchet.
His key relationships revolve around Optimus Prime, whom he views as a personal rival and the target of his theatrical contempt, and the Mini-Cons Backtrack and Ransack, who serve as his battle partners and are deployed against his enemies. His reliance on them ultimately contributes to his defeat when they are persuaded to abandon him. He also functions within the larger Decepticon hierarchy under figures such as Steeljaw and Glowstrike, though he seems less interested in their politics than in his own standing and his grudge against Prime.
In terms of abilities, Overload is defined by his immense size, his natural strength, and his armor, which is described as virtually impenetrable and allows him to withstand attacks that would damage other characters. He is also able to deploy Mini-Cons into battle, making him a commander-style fighter who can direct smaller allies while engaging opponents directly. His toy form transforms into a tank, although he never transforms on screen during the series itself.
His development across his appearances shows a character who was once a highly effective and feared intelligence operative, reduced by imprisonment to an escaped fugitive obsessed with reclaiming his reputation and settling his score with Optimus Prime. Despite his talent and power, his arrogance and theatrical ego repeatedly undermine him, leading to defeats at the hands of opponents he considers beneath him and eventually to his recapture and removal from Earth.
