Description
Chop Shop is a Decepticon criminal from the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. He is an unusual type of combiner, a one-bot heist crew composed of five individual insectoid components that can unite to form a single, larger robot. These components are typically referred to as his "lads," with his right arm component sometimes called "Righty".

Chop Shop is not a typical Decepticon warrior. He lacks the common thirst for battle and bloodshed, preferring to flee a scene rather than engage in a drawn-out fight. This is not because he cannot defend himself, but because he knows that lingering too long at a crime scene leads to capture, an experience he is keen to avoid. Instead of violence, his primary drive is theft. A compulsive kleptomaniac, Chop Shop has amassed an enormous criminal record over his lifetime, earning him a reputation as one of Cybertron’s most notorious thieves. His rap sheet is famously described as being "as long as Alpha Trion's beard". Deep down, he mostly wishes to be left alone to pursue his own interests, but his favorite pastime of robbing others makes a peaceful life impossible. There are hints that he might possess a spark of altruism deep within, but it would take extraordinary circumstances to bring it to the surface.

In the story, Chop Shop is an escaped prisoner from the Alchemor, a Decepticon prison ship that crashed on Earth. His primary goal upon gaining freedom is to leave the planet entirely. To this end, he steals a variety of components, including copper wiring, computer chips, and an aircraft gyroscope, to construct a spacecraft. His final required item is a supply of liquid oxygen to use as fuel. His efforts consistently bring him into conflict with Bumblebee’s team of Autobots, who attempt to recapture him. Despite his avoidance of unnecessary violence, he proves to be a formidable and cunning opponent, using his unique ability to separate and recombine to outmaneuver his pursuers.

Chop Shop has several key relationships with other characters. He has a direct antagonistic relationship with Bumblebee and his team, including Strongarm, Sideswipe, and Grimlock. He also has a unique and forced relationship with the Mini-Con Fixit. After losing his right arm component to Strongarm, Chop Shop forcibly attaches Fixit to his shoulder to serve as a replacement limb, using the unwilling Mini-Con as a weapon against his own teammates. Fixit later rebels against Chop Shop, helping to secure his defeat. Chop Shop's own components, particularly Righty, are loyal to him and work to free him from captivity. On one occasion, after being freed from a cocoon by Bumblebee, Righty temporarily helps protect the human characters Denny and Russell Clay from another Decepticon, Nightstrike, as a way of repaying the debt. The rest of Chop Shop is eventually placed in a stasis pod and later returned to Cybertron.

Chop Shop’s character sees a small degree of development through his repeated encounters with the Autobots. While he never truly reforms, his component Righty displays a brief moment of selflessness when he agrees to help the human characters, suggesting that even a fragment of a notorious criminal is capable of a good deed when the situation calls for it. Ultimately, his defining characteristic remains his desire for freedom and his inability to resist the urge to steal, which consistently leads to his downfall.

Chop Shop possesses several notable abilities. His primary power is the ability to split apart into five separate spider-like robots, each of which can move and attack independently. This effectively makes him a one-bot team, allowing him to perform complex heists and overwhelm opponents from multiple angles. Each of his components can deliver a powerful, painful sting capable of paralyzing other Transformers. In his combined form, he has impressive strength and can generate red electricity from his hands to shock and harm his enemies. Perhaps his most unusual ability is the capacity to forcibly incorporate smaller Transformers into his body as replacement limbs, a tactic he demonstrates by attaching Fixit to himself when one of his own components is unavailable.
