Description
The Hermit is a human character from the Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015) animated series. As his nickname implies, he lives a solitary life, operating from a rundown recreational vehicle that serves as both his home and mobile base of operations. A distinctive and immediate visual cue to his personality is the tinfoil hat he wears, which he believes protects his mind from government surveillance and mind-reading rays. He has dedicated approximately forty years of his life to a singular obsession: searching for definitive proof of extraterrestrial life. His entire existence revolves around this pursuit, driving him to camp in remote and often hazardous locations in his quest for alien contact. This unwavering commitment is matched by a deep-seated belief in conspiracy theories concerning aliens and the government's secret operations.

In terms of personality, the Hermit is characterized by a blend of paranoia, eccentricity, and a surprising degree of resilience. His conviction in his beliefs is absolute, making him skeptical of official warnings and resistant to conventional authority. Despite the risks he takes, which include staying in areas of significant danger, he has managed to survive for decades, pointing to a certain rugged resourcefulness. When faced with the extraordinary, such as encountering a Transformer, his mind does not readily accept reality but instead rationalizes the experience through the lens of his pre-existing worldview, dismissing it as a hallucination caused by environmental factors like cactus juice.

His role in the story is that of a minor, comedic character who interacts with the main Autobot cast during a specific mission. The Autobots encounter him while he is camped in an irradiated desert valley, a location he has chosen specifically for his alien-hunting activities. Their primary objective is to evacuate him from the area due to the dangerous levels of radiation. He refuses to leave, prioritizing his search for aliens over his personal safety. The Autobots efforts to reason with him backfire; when they transform into their robot modes in an attempt to persuade or scare him away, he interprets the event not as proof of aliens but as a delusion.

Key relationships are brief and largely antagonistic or transactional. He interacts with several Autobots, including Strongarm and Sideswipe, who are initially tasked with his evacuation. He treats them with suspicion, assuming their vehicle modes are ordinary human cars. Later, he has a more direct encounter with the Decepticon Heatseeker, who intends to use him as a hostage. Demonstrating his characteristic refusal to be deterred, the Hermit mistakes Heatseeker for another hallucination, finishes changing a flat tire on his RV, and drives away as a battle erupts behind him. He also briefly interacts with Bumblebee, who arrives in his flying car mode to engage Heatseeker. The Hermit escapes the ensuing explosion, his survival a testament to his stubborn luck.

The character shows no significant development or arc within the story. He begins as a paranoid conspiracy theorist and alien hunter and ends in the same state, his core beliefs unchallenged by the actual presence of aliens. The experience of seeing transforming robots does not convert him but is instead filtered and dismissed by his existing delusions. His notable abilities are not physical or combative but instead lie in his sheer persistence, his capacity to rationalize away contradictory evidence, and an almost inexplicable knack for survival in high-stakes situations. The most tangible piece of his equipment is the tinfoil hat, which he believes grants him protection from mental intrusion.
