Description
Kyoya Mitsuragi, often referred to simply as Mitsurugi, is a supporting character in the anime Konosuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! 2. He is a young Japanese man who, like the protagonist Kazuma Satou, died and was reincarnated into a fantasy world. Upon his death, he appeared before the goddess Aqua, who granted him a powerful cursed sword named Gram and tasked him with defeating the Demon King. Mitsurugi quickly rose to become the third-ranked adventurer in the kingdom of Belzerg, leading his own party that includes the adventurers Cremea and Fio.

Physically, Mitsurugi is a handsome young man with light brown hair and blue eyes, typically clad in gleaming blue plate armor with gold trim and a wing motif on the chest. He cuts an impressive, heroic figure that matches his idealized self-image.

In terms of personality, Mitsurugi is portrayed as having a strong sense of justice and a naive, earnest belief in traditional heroism. He is charismatic and competent in combat, and he genuinely wants to save the world and protect others. However, his unwavering sense of honor and his tendency to see things in black-and-white terms often lead him into conflict with Kazuma, who is cynical, lazy, and far more pragmatic. Mitsurugi serves as a foil to Kazuma: where Kazuma schemes and takes shortcuts, Mitsurugi charges headfirst into danger with straightforward determination.

Mitsurugi’s primary motivation is to defeat the Demon King and win the admiration of Aqua, toward whom he feels a deep romantic infatuation. He believes that by proving himself as the perfect hero, he can earn her affection. This leads him to challenge Kazuma to a duel for Aqua’s companionship in season one, a duel he loses due to Kazuma’s cunning rather than raw strength. This defeat humbles him somewhat and sets the tone for his later appearances.

In the story, Mitsurugi initially appears as a rival to Kazuma, but his role evolves into that of a recurring comic figure whose over-the-top heroism clashes with the dysfunctional reality of the world. He is powerful enough to slay an ancient dragon in a single blow or tear open metal bars with his bare hands, but he relies heavily on his cheat item, the cursed sword Gram. When Gram is lost or taken—such as when Kazuma sells it—Mitsurugi is forced to take on mundane work to earn money, revealing that his strength is tied to his equipment and that he lacks the adaptability Kazuma possesses.

Key relationships include his admiration for Aqua, whom he sees as a perfect goddess, and his rivalry with Kazuma, which is fueled by both competition for Aqua’s attention and their contrasting worldviews. He interacts infrequently with Megumin or Darkness, but his presence often highlights the absurd gap between the idealized fantasy hero and the reality of Kazuma’s party.

Development for Mitsurugi is subtle: he begins as a confident, almost arrogant hero figure but gradually learns that the world is not as simple as a heroic quest. His defeats and humiliations—especially losing his sword and having to work for a living—force him to confront his own limitations, though he never fully abandons his chivalric mindset.

Notable abilities include his high physical stats as a reincarnated individual, his skill as a Sword Master, and the cursed sword Gram, which is immensely powerful but also carries a curse that can be a liability. He is capable of feats far beyond ordinary adventurers, such as one-shotting a dragon, but his reliance on his cheat item makes him vulnerable when it is unavailable. Overall, Mitsurugi represents the traditional isekai hero archetype, but the series uses him to comically deconstruct that trope by contrasting his earnestness with the messy, nonsensical world of Konosuba.
