Description
Osamu Dazai is a central character in Bungo Stray Dogs whose role in the story spans two very different worlds. At the time of the second season, he is a member of the Armed Detective Agency, a group of individuals with supernatural abilities who handle cases beyond the reach of ordinary law enforcement. Before joining the agency, however, he was one of the most feared figures in Yokohama's criminal underworld as an executive of the Port Mafia. He is a tall, slender young man around twenty-two years old, with short, messy dark brown hair, narrow dark brown eyes, and fair skin. His body is wrapped in bandages, and he typically wears a beige trench coat over a collared shirt with a bolo tie, giving him an effortlessly striking appearance.

On the surface, Dazai presents himself as carefree, playful, and eccentric. He is famous for his fixation on suicide, repeatedly attempting to end his life in theatrical and often absurd ways, while insisting that he wants a painless death and dreams of a double suicide with a beautiful woman. These tendencies are treated with dark humor throughout the series, but they are rooted in something deeper: a persistent sense of emptiness and a feeling that he is somehow not fully human. Beneath his cheerful and unserious exterior lies an extraordinarily sharp and calculating mind. He is highly intelligent, perceptive, and strategic, able to read people's motives, predict their actions, and manipulate situations long before others understand what is happening. His lighthearted behavior is largely a mask that allows him to keep others at a distance while he observes and controls the flow of events.

Dazai's abilities reflect his unusual nature. His supernatural power, named No Longer Human, is a passive ability that nullifies any other ability simply through physical contact. It operates constantly without requiring his conscious effort and stops functioning only when his heart stops beating. This makes him an invaluable counter to nearly any opponent in a world where most conflicts involve supernatural powers. Because his own ability is defensive rather than offensive, Dazai relies on his intellect, experience, and quick reflexes to fight. He is also highly skilled in psychological manipulation and interrogation, having specialized in torture during his time in the mafia, and he is credited with creating many of the Port Mafia's surveillance tactics.

Dazai's past explains much of his present behavior. He joined the Port Mafia as a teenager and rose rapidly through its ranks to become the youngest executive in the organization's history. During that period he was known by intimidating titles reflecting his cold, ruthless competence, and he was feared for his brilliance and his detachment from ordinary moral concerns. He formed a legendary partnership with Chuuya Nakahara, a powerful ability user who controls gravity. Together they were known as Double Black, a combination considered nearly unstoppable because Dazai could neutralize opposing abilities while Chuuya provided overwhelming force. Despite their friction and constant bickering, the two could cooperate seamlessly when the situation demanded it.

The turning point in Dazai's life came through his friendship with Sakunosuke Oda, a fellow mafia member who understood him better than almost anyone. Oda recognized that Dazai would always carry darkness and loneliness within him, but before his death, Oda urged Dazai to become someone who saves people rather than someone who kills them. These final words had a profound effect on Dazai. After Oda's death, Dazai left the Port Mafia, spent roughly two years in hiding, and eventually joined the Armed Detective Agency with the goal of working on the side of saving others. This backstory, often referred to as the Dark Era, forms a major part of the second season of the anime and gives depth to everything Dazai does afterward.

Within the Armed Detective Agency, Dazai takes on the role of mentor to the protagonist, Atsushi Nakajima. He is the one who discovers Atsushi, recognizes the boy's hidden abilities, and recruits him into the agency, effectively giving Atsushi a place to belong. Dazai guides Atsushi not by giving him easy answers but by creating situations that force the younger man to make his own choices and grow. He expresses genuine belief in Atsushi's potential, once remarking that Atsushi is superior to certain members of the mafia, a statement that reopens old wounds in his relationship with his former student, Ryunosuke Akutagawa.

Dazai's relationship with Akutagawa is one of the most complex in the series. During his mafia years, Dazai mentored Akutagawa and trained him harshly, but he never gave the young man the approval he craved. This neglect left Akutagawa bitter and desperate for recognition, creating a lasting rivalry and resentment that persists even when the two find themselves on the same side. Dazai's partnership with his agency colleague Doppo Kunikida is another defining relationship. Kunikida is serious, idealistic, and disciplined, while Dazai is lazy, teasing, and unpredictable, and their contrasting personalities make them effective partners despite constant friction.

Over the course of the story, Dazai develops as a figure caught between the darkness of his past and his commitment to a better path. He genuinely works to protect his colleagues and to honor the promise he made to Oda, even though he continues to struggle with loneliness and his longing for death. He becomes a key strategist in the agency's battles, including confrontations with the Guild and later with the criminal mastermind Fyodor Dostoevsky, and he is willing to cooperate even with former enemies, such as Chuuya, when the threat is great enough. Dazai's defining traits remain his mysterious nature, his unmatched intellect, and the quiet tragedy beneath his cheerful mask. He is a character who has walked through both cruelty and compassion, who constantly jokes about dying, and yet who keeps choosing, again and again, to use his genius in the service of saving others.
