Description
Lana is a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island and originally hails from Konikoni City on Akala Island. She serves as the Trial Captain of Brooklet Hill, a role in which she tests trainers by battling the totem Pokémon of the area. Her expertise lies with Water-type Pokémon, reflecting her deep familiarity with the ocean and marine life. She is described as calm and gentle in most situations, yet she possesses a playful sense of humor, often telling exaggerated fisherman tales such as claiming to have hooked a legendary Pokémon like Kyogre. Despite this lighthearted side, she is fiercely protective of her family, particularly her two younger twin sisters, for whom she acts as a reliable older sister. Her family runs a fishing business, and Lana frequently helps with chores and babysitting.

Her primary motivation stems from her love for the sea and her desire to bond with Water-type Pokémon. She is deeply caring toward her own Pokémon, having rescued her first partner, a Popplio, from Team Skull's harassment and nursed it back to health. This Popplio later evolves into Brionne and ultimately into Primarina. Lana also captures an Eevee, nicknamed Sandy, which she befriends after the Pokémon travels to Alola and learns to surf on a Mantine. She demonstrates a strong drive to master Z-Moves, earning a Z-Ring from Olivia and obtaining a Waterium Z crystal, allowing her to perform powerful moves such as Hydro Vortex and later Oceanic Operetta with Primarina.

In the story, Lana is one of Ash Ketchum's classmates and closest companions. She often leads group activities related to water, such as fishing trips and swimming lessons. Her calm demeanor sometimes masks a surprisingly intense and determined side; when her Pokémon or friends are threatened, she can become stern and even intimidating, an aspect fans refer to as "dark Lana." She also shows occasional shyness, especially when teased about her interactions with Ash. Her relationship with Mallow is particularly close, as they have been friends since childhood. She also develops a friendly rivalry and mutual respect with Misty, a fellow Water-type specialist, after they meet during a visit.

Throughout the series, Lana undergoes noticeable development. She grows from a somewhat timid student into a confident trainer capable of protecting a wild Kyogre from Pokémon hunters and later using her skills to help others during crises. She participates in the Alola League, reaching the quarterfinals. After the league concludes, she embarks on an ocean survey with her father to search for the mythical Pokémon Manaphy, reflecting her enduring fascination with the sea.

Notable abilities include her exceptional fishing skill, her aptitude for swimming and underwater activities, and her strong physical strength despite her slender build. She is also an accomplished battler, adept at using Water-type moves and strategizing around type advantages. Her mastery of Z-Moves and her ability to coordinate with her Pokémon in high-pressure situations further demonstrate her competence as a trainer.
