Description
Kaki is a main character in the animated series Pokémon Sun & Moon, where he appears as a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island in the Alola region. He is one of the first friends and rivals that the protagonist meets upon arriving in Alola and becomes a key member of his circle of classmates. Kaki comes from a family that runs a ranch and farm on Akala Island, and he has a younger sister named Hoshi, for whom he shows a deeply caring and sometimes overprotective nature. His family is also the caretaker of a powerful Charizard that originally belonged to his late grandfather, a former Island King of Akala. This Charizard serves as both Kaki's primary transportation for making deliveries across the islands and a trusted partner in battle.
In terms of personality, Kaki is one of the most serious, mature, and experienced members of the class. He is calm, confident, and deeply dedicated to the traditional ways of Alola, particularly the island challenge and the proper use of Z-Moves. He obtained his Z-Ring by completing the grand trials, unlike the protagonist who received his from the guardian deity Tapu Koko. Because of this, Kaki initially holds a great deal of respect for the responsibility that comes with a Z-Ring and can become agitated when others, such as the protagonist, treat Z-Crystals carelessly, once becoming furious when an Electrium Z was lost. He has a strong, straightforward approach to solving problems, which is reflected in his reliance on powerful Fire-type Pokémon. His affinity for fire is so strong that he often struggles to relate to or handle Water-type Pokémon, finding them awkward or difficult to interact with. A notable running characteristic is his immense enthusiasm for his signature Z-Move, the Inferno Overdrive, which he mentions frequently and sometimes unleashes almost involuntarily.
Kaki's role in the story is that of a seasoned local guide and a passionate rival to the protagonist. He is an active member of the Ultra Guardians, a task force formed to deal with Ultra Beasts that appear in Alola, and he participated in the mission to rescue Lusamine in an Ultra Wormhole. His personal journey focuses on mastering his abilities as a Fire-type trainer and proving his own strength. One of his most significant developments occurs during a visit to the ruins of Poni Island, where the guardian deity Tapu Fini becomes angered by a battle and traps the protagonist in a bubble. Tapu Fini then sets a trial for Kaki, requiring him to retrieve a scale from the guardian Tapu Lele on Akala Island within a strict time limit to save his friend. Racing against the clock on his Charizard, Kaki ultimately succeeds, earning Tapu Fini's respect and receiving a Flyinium Z, which allows him to use the Z-Move Supersonic Skystrike.
He maintains several key relationships within the group. He is close friends with Māmane, with whom he often shares a more practical and technical perspective on training. He also has a reliable working relationship with Mao, another classmate. His rivalry with the protagonist is built on mutual respect, pushing both to become stronger trainers. He is a caring, if sometimes overbearing, older brother to Hoshi, often doting on her and wanting to protect her from any potential harm.
Kaki specializes in Fire-type Pokémon, which are the foundation of his battling style. His main battling partner is a stubborn and powerful Turtonator, a Dragon-Fire type that he uses to deliver devastating Inferno Overdrives. His family's Charizard, inherited from his grandfather, is another cornerstone of his team, used for both aerial transportation and combat, capable of performing powerful Flame Throwers and the Flyinium Z-Move. He also captures an Alolan Marowak, a Fire-Ghost type that wields a bone club and has a fierce rivalry with his Turtonator, often competing to see which is stronger. Marowak eventually becomes a trusted member of his team and is used in official league battles. Through his dedication, experience, and the strong bonds with his Pokémon, Kaki reaches the quarter-finals of the Alola Pokémon League, proving himself one of the most formidable trainers of his generation.
