Description
Mao is a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island in the Alola region. She lives in Konikoni City and helps run her family’s restaurant, Aina Kitchen, alongside her father and older brother. Her mother passed away when Mao was very young, a loss that deeply shaped her emotional journey throughout the series.

Mao is cheerful, energetic, and outgoing. She welcomes new friends with enthusiasm and is always ready to lend a hand or share a meal. Her love for cooking is central to her character; she often experiments with new recipes and hopes to one day make Aina Kitchen the best restaurant in all of Alola. While her cooking is generally well-received, her more creative dishes can be unpredictable.

Her primary motivation is to honor her mother’s memory and to support her family. She also takes pride in her role as a supportive friend and classmate. Mao is part of the main group of students who accompany Ash Ketchum on various adventures, and she participates in the island challenge, eventually earning a Z-Ring and a Grassium Z. She becomes one of the Ultra Guardians, helping to protect Alola from Ultra Beasts.

Mao’s closest friend is Lana, and the two share a playful, teasing dynamic. She also has strong bonds with Kiawe, Sophocles, Lillie, and Ash. Her relationship with her father and brother is warm, though she sometimes clashes with her father’s carefree attitude. A key emotional arc involves her unresolved feelings toward her late mother. After a mist created by Tapu Fini allows her to see a vision of her mother, Mao finally apologizes for the harsh words she spoke as a child and finds closure. Soon after, she encounters a Shaymin, which she cares for until it can rejoin its kind.

Over the course of the series, Mao matures significantly. She learns to confront her grief and becomes more confident in her abilities. Her partner Pokémon, a Bounsweet given to her by her mother, evolves first into Steenee and later into Tsareena. Tsareena becomes a capable battler, learning moves like Trop Kick and Magical Leaf, and is able to use the Z-Move Bloom Doom. Mao also briefly uses Shaymin in the Alola League, making her the first main character to use a Mythical Pokémon in an official league battle.

Mao’s notable abilities include her culinary skills, which she uses both at the restaurant and to help her friends, and her expertise with Grass-type Pokémon. She is a determined and compassionate trainer who values her friendships above all else.
