TV-Series
Description
Asuma Mutsumi is a third-year high school student and the president of the history club, which he shares with the protagonist, Kae Serinuma. As an upperclassman, he is known for his calm, gentle, and laid-back demeanor. His personality is consistently kind and his patience is notable, often acting as a mediator within the group. He is portrayed as a classic "nice guy," and at the start of the story, he appears to be mostly oblivious to the romantic feelings developing around him.
One of the most defining aspects of Asuma's background is that he is one of the very few people who liked Kae for her personality before her drastic weight loss, appreciating her kind and caring nature. He is able to recognize her immediately after her transformation, telling her that her warm inner self has not changed. This establishes a deep connection based on genuine affection rather than superficial attraction. His personality is also marked by an open-minded and generous spirit, which sometimes leads others to call him too passive or easygoing, as he often goes along with group activities without complaint.
Regarding his motivations, for a significant portion of the story, Asuma does not actively pursue Kae in a romantic sense. Unlike the other boys vying for her attention, he does not display jealousy and genuinely seems to enjoy spending time with the entire group, viewing his romantic rivals as friends. His motivations shift when his older brother, Kazuma, a handsome and flirtatious student teacher, arrives on the scene and begins aggressively pursuing Kae. Kazuma's presence forces Asuma to confront his own feelings. The jealousy and protectiveness he experiences are new to him, prompting him to analyze whether his affection for Kae is merely friendly or something deeper. Ultimately, his motivation becomes to protect Kae from his brother and to understand and act upon his own burgeoning romantic love.
Asuma's role in the story is that of the reliable and supportive senpai. He is often the calm center of the group, providing a contrast to the more volatile or competitive personalities of the other male leads. While he is generally a pacifist, he has a protective streak and can become aggressive when he perceives that Kae is being mistreated or harassed, such as when confronting cat-callers. A significant part of his role is tied to his relationship with his brother. Kazuma serves as a catalyst for Asuma's character development, pushing the usually passive and selfless Asuma to become assertive and claim something he wants for himself.
Key relationships define his character arc. His relationship with Kae Serinuma is the central one, evolving from a purely friendly senpai-kohai dynamic to a romantic pursuit. His relationship with his older brother Kazuma is complex; despite Kazuma being the source of Asuma's childhood trauma, including a fear of the dark that resulted from being locked in a shed, their bond is close. Kazuma's teasing and competitive nature ultimately help Asuma grow. Asuma also maintains amicable relationships with his romantic rivals, including Yūsuke Igarashi, Nozomu Nanashima, and Hayato Shinomiya, often treating them with the same generosity he shows everyone else.
Asuma undergoes significant development throughout the series. Initially characterized as someone who is unsure of his own feelings and content to let things be, he transforms into a more confident individual. He becomes the first among Kae's suitors to openly confess his love for her, a surprising move for the least forthright member of the group. This act of boldness represents a major turning point, as he moves from a passive observer to an active participant in his own romantic life. His development is essentially a journey of self-discovery, learning to distinguish between platonic affection and romantic love, and finding the courage to act on the latter.
In terms of notable abilities, Asuma is highly intelligent, particularly in the subject of history, which is his passion. He is known to become excited when encountering anything related to historical places or objects. His knowledge of Japanese history is extensive enough to give him an edge in a trading card game duel against his brother. Aside from his academic intelligence, his most notable ability is his emotional intelligence and capacity for unconditional kindness. He has the unique ability to see past physical appearances and value a person for their character, a trait that sets him apart from the very beginning. His straightforwardness once he understands his own heart is also a notable trait, as he does not hesitate to confess once his feelings become clear to him.
