Description
Keiko Ayano, known in virtual spaces as Silica, is a supporting character who appears throughout the Sword Art Online series, including the Ordinal Scale film. One of the ten thousand players trapped in the death game of Sword Art Online, she was one of the youngest active participants at the age of twelve. In the real world following the game's clearance, she is a student attending a school for SAO survivors. Her real name, Keiko, contains the character for silicon, which directly inspired her in-game alias, Silica. She was born on October 4, 2010.
Silica is characterized by a bright, cheerful, and kind-hearted personality, always showing strong support for her friends. She has a gentle and compassionate nature, which extends not only to people but also to the digital creatures she befriends. This sensitivity, however, makes her prone to embarrassment and becoming flustered, particularly when confronted with romantic situations or teasing. A formative experience within Sword Art Online taught her a valuable lesson about humility. She admits to having become arrogant due to her fame as a rare Beast Tamer, but this arrogance led her to venture alone into a dangerous area, resulting in the loss of her beloved familiar, Pina. This event made her realize her mistake and contributed to her personal growth. Deep down, she carries emotional scars from her time in the death game, but she works through them with the support of her loved ones, showing resilience and a desire to ensure others do not have to face loneliness as she once did.
Her primary motivation throughout the series is the protection and well-being of her friends, most notably her feathered little dragon companion, Pina. The bond with Pina is central to her character; she was heartbroken when Pina sacrificed herself to save her and was overjoyed at the prospect of reviving her. In Ordinal Scale, her motivation extends to helping her close friends, including Kirito and Asuna, as she overcomes her nervousness to bravely face the dangers of the new augmented reality game. Her actions are driven by loyalty and a desire to contribute to the group, stepping beyond her comfort zone to protect her allies during intense battles.
In the story of Ordinal Scale, Keiko, along with her fellow SAO survivors, is drawn into the new Augma device and its associated game. She appears as part of the main group of players who reunite to investigate the mystery behind the game and its connection to the past death game. She bravely participates in the final battle against the nostalgic bosses summoned from Aincrad, putting her skills to use to support the team. Her role is that of a supportive but capable fighter, whose growth is shown as she faces danger directly in the real world through augmented reality.
Key relationships define her social circle. Her most significant relationship is with her familiar, Pina, a feathered little dragon who serves as her constant companion and partner in battle, capable of healing and using distracting bubble breath attacks. She shares a close friendship with Lisbeth, with the two forming a supportive alliance and often seen together during group events. Keiko deeply respects and admires Kirito, who saved her life and helped her revive Pina during the SAO incident. She developed feelings for him but eventually came to see him as a big brother figure, partly because he reminded her of his own sister, Suguha. In Ordinal Scale, she is shown to be part of his trusted inner circle of allies.
Keiko shows notable development from a young, sometimes arrogant player who was treated as a mascot by her party to a more mature, humble, and reliable adventurer. The traumatic experience of losing Pina and being saved by Kirito was a turning point, forcing her to confront her own weaknesses. By the time of Ordinal Scale, she has gained confidence and is no longer just a follower but an active and courageous member of the team who can be counted on in a fight.
Keiko does not possess supernatural abilities in the real world. However, her years of playing virtual reality games have trained her reflexes, agility, and spatial awareness, granting her physical coordination comparable to a mid-tier gymnast. Within the virtual world of Alfheim Online, she plays as a Cait Sith, a race characterized by cat ears and a tail. Her combat style revolves around using a dagger for quick, agile strikes. As a Beast Tamer, her notable ability is her synergy with Pina, who can provide healing support and cast bubble breath to confuse enemies, making Silica a key supporter in her party, especially in groups with many direct attackers. In Ordinal Scale, she uses the Augma device to apply her in-game agility and fighting instincts to the augmented reality environment.
