Description
Eiji, whose full name is Nochizawa Eiji, is a character introduced in the film Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale. He is a young man in his twenties, standing at 178 centimeters tall, and is a student at Tokyo Industrial University. As a survivor of the deadly Sword Art Online incident, his in-game avatar was named Nautilus, and he was once a member of the prestigious Knights of the Blood guild.
In the real world, Eiji is a childhood friend of a girl named Yuuna Shigemura, for whom he holds deep, unspoken feelings. His fundamental motivation throughout the story is rooted in the trauma he experienced within the virtual death game. During a boss battle on the forti floor of Aincrad, his close friend Yuuna sacrificed herself to save the raid party. At that critical moment, Eiji was rendered helpless due to a condition known as FullDive Non-Conformity, which caused his body to freeze in response to intense fear and danger, preventing him from coming to her rescue. This event left him with immense guilt, self-hatred, and a feeling of powerlessness that he could never overcome.
This trauma has shaped a brooding and resentful personality. He is driven by a singular, desperate goal to revive Yuuna, who perished in Sword Art Online. After the game was cleared, he was approached by Yuuna's father, Professor Shigemura Tetsuhiro, and recruited to help carry out a plan to restore her as an artificial intelligence using scanned memories from other SAO survivors. Fueled by his personal loss, Eiji becomes the primary enforcer of this plan. His resentment is particularly focused on the guild Fuurinkazan, whose members he blames for refusing to help Yuuna during the fatal incident, leading him to physically assault them in the real world to steal their memories.
To fulfill his role, Eiji is equipped with a powerful exosuit that greatly enhances his physical strength and a specially modified Augma device that can predict opponent movements. These tools allow him to become the second-ranked player in the augmented reality game Ordinal Scale. His fighting style is aggressive and physically commanding, often using brute force to overpower his opponents. Unlike many other SAO survivors who embraced virtual reality, Eiji initially struggled with AR and VR systems due to his lingering psychological trauma, which manifested as the FullDive Non-Conformity. However, he overcomes this weakness by the time of the events in the Underworld.
Throughout Ordinal Scale, he serves as a rival to Kirito, acting as an obstacle who believes that sacrificing the painful memories of other survivors is a justifiable price for the chance to bring Yuuna back. His most significant relationship is with the memory of Yuuna, whom he idealizes and whose loss defines his existence. His dynamic with Professor Shigemura is one of a manipulated tool; the professor ultimately betrays him, discarding Eiji once his usefulness in the plan has ended. After the professor's scheme is foiled by Kirito, Eiji must confront the consequences of his actions. Following the collapse of the revival plan, he turns himself in to the police for his assaults.
Despite his role as an antagonist, Eiji experiences a notable redemption. When the opportunity arises to assist Kirito later, he does so without hesitation. In the War of Underworld, he has fully overcome his VR incompatibility and logs into ALfheim Online with a copy of Yuuna as his navigation pixie. He answers a call for aid and fights alongside the main characters, even confronting the powerful villain PoH to protect Kirito and prove his resolve. In this battle, he returns to his original avatar form, Nautilus, symbolically shedding his vengeful identity and reclaiming his past as a swordsman who fights to protect others.
