Description
Masamune Izumi is the main protagonist of Eromanga Sensei. He is a sixteen-year-old high school student who works professionally as a light novel author under the pen name Izumi Masamune. He began his writing career in middle school after winning a light novel writing contest and later authored the popular series Silverwolf of Reincarnation, which sold over two hundred thousand copies. He later transitioned to writing romantic comedy light novels.

Personality wise, Masamune is hardworking, caring, and serious about both his writing and family. He possesses a strong sense of responsibility and independence, having decided at the age of fourteen to take care of himself and his younger stepsister Sagiri after the deaths of their parents. He is positive, cheerful, and kind, yet also somewhat self-conscious and prone to embarrassment. He is straightforward in his actions and willing to put others before his own happiness, even if it means sacrificing his own feelings. At the same time, he is often described as dense when it comes to romantic advances from the girls around him.

Masamune's primary motivation is to support his stepsister Sagiri, who has become a complete shut-in after their parents' death and refuses to leave her room. He works tirelessly as a novelist to provide for both of them and desperately wants to help Sagiri reintegrate into the world. He also aims to become a successful and respected author in his own right, a goal that drives him to compete with and learn from other writers.

His role in the story is that of the central character around whom the events revolve. He is the link between the various heroines and the catalyst for much of the plot, as his discovery that his anonymous illustrator, known by the pen name Eromanga Sensei, is actually his own sister Sagiri, sets the main narrative in motion. He balances his school life, his writing career, and his household duties while navigating complicated relationships with the female characters who enter his life.

Masamune's most important relationship is with his stepsister Sagiri Izumi. After discovering that she is his artistic collaborator, he becomes fiercely protective of her and works hard to take care of her. Their bond deepens over the course of the series, transitioning from a caretaker relationship to a romantic one, and by the end of the light novel, Masamune proposes to Sagiri, and they become a couple. With Yamada Elf, a supremely popular and arrogant fellow author who initially clashes with Masamune, a competitive but respectful relationship develops, with Elf often giving him hints and advice as a more experienced writer. With Senju Muramasa, an overwhelmingly talented author who was initially hostile toward him, Masamune eventually forms a friendship after earning her respect, and she later confesses her love for him, though he does not reciprocate. His childhood friend Takasago Tomoe is a supportive presence who knows about his profession and teases him affectionately, while his younger friend Megumi Kamino looks up to him as an older brother figure.

Throughout the story, Masamune undergoes notable development. He matures from a boy solely focused on survival and supporting his sister into a young man who confronts his own feelings, makes difficult decisions about his future, and builds a larger circle of relationships. He grows in confidence as a writer and learns to trust his collaborators. His most significant development is his acceptance of his love for Sagiri and his decision to build a life with her, despite the social complications that entails.

As a writer, Masamune's notable ability is his capacity to produce work rapidly and consistently, drafting multiple novels annually while attending school. His writing style and output earn him recognition in the light novel industry, and he participates in and performs well at events such as the Light Novel Tenkaichi Butōkai, where he defeats rivals much more experienced than himself. Beyond writing, he is also a capable homemaker, handling all the cooking and cleaning for the household.
