Description
Kiyomitsu Kashuu is a tsukumogami, a spirit that has taken human form from an ancient uchigatana blade that was once wielded by the famed Shinsengumi captain Okita Souji. Forged in 1684 by a swordsmith of the same name who lived in poverty by a riverbank, Kiyomitsu refers to himself as a child of the river, a term connected to the low social status of his creator. This origin deeply influences his present behavior and worldview.

Because he was born into a poor and neglected environment, Kiyomitsu firmly believes that maintaining a clean, beautiful, and fashionable appearance is the only way to earn love and avoid being discarded. He is highly conscious of his looks, painting his nails and adorning himself with red accessories to complement his predominantly black attire. On the surface, he carries himself with a sense of confidence and a slightly demanding or capricious attitude, openly stating that he wants a master who will cherish and dote on him. However, this vanity is a carefully constructed mask for profound insecurity. His greatest fear is being abandoned, a trauma that stems from his life as a sword when he was broken at the tip during the Ikedaya Incident and was deemed unrepairable, leading to his beloved master Okita Souji leaving him behind. Because of this, he harbors deep anxieties about going into battle, fearing that any damage to his form will cause his new master to reject him just as he was rejected before.

In the Hanamaru citadel, Kiyomitsu is often found in the company of Yamatonokami Yasusada, another sword who also served Okita Souji. The two appear to be polar opposites; where Kiyomitsu is flashy and seeks external validation, Yasusada is more stoic and grounded. Their relationship is characterized by frequent, petty squabbling, yet this rivalry masks a deep understanding and a close, unbreakable bond forged by their shared history. They are often depicted as a pair and are central figures among the swords living at the citadel. Despite his demanding personality, Kiyomitsu genuinely cares for his comrades and will readily offer help and support, even if he complains about it while doing so. His role in the story is that of a deuteragonist, with the narrative often focusing on his daily life, his relationship with Yasusada, and his personal struggles with self-worth.

Over the course of the series, Kiyomitsu gradually works through his deep-seated fear of being unwanted, learning to accept his place in the new household and trust in the bonds he has formed with the Saniwa and the other swords. As a sword warrior, his abilities are considerable; he is described as being difficult to handle but possessing excellent performance. He is a skilled combatant who relies on his experience from his previous life, training regularly with his peers. While he does not actively seek out fights, he refuses to stand idly by when others are in danger. His fighting style is pragmatic, and he maintains a conscious concern for keeping his blade and attire pristine even in the midst of battle, hoping to prove that he is a beautiful and effective tool deserving of his master's affection.
