Description
Kensuke Hanasaki is one of the two main protagonists in the story and an active member of the Boy Detectives Club. He is an average-sized teenager with lightly tanned skin, flat brown hair, and sky blue eyes. His typical appearance includes the standard school uniform, though outside of school he is often seen in an orange tracksuit with red stripes down the sides.

Kensuke was adopted into the Hanasaki family as an orphan. He formed a close bond with his stepbrother, Haruhiko. When their adoptive father wished to send Kensuke back to the orphanage, Haruhiko opposed the decision so strongly that he disappeared from the family home, allowing Kensuke to remain and become the eldest son. This event deeply affected Kensuke and shaped his admiration for his brother.

Kensuke possesses a very energetic and confident personality. He is a proactive individual who acts on instinct and his strong sense of justice, often taking immediate action in situations he finds unfair or dangerous. He has been described as an adrenaline junkie who lives for thrills and excitement. He is quick-thinking and adaptable, capable of using gadgets to cushion a fall from a great height or operating a machine gun to infiltrate a criminal’s sky fortress.

However, his personality is not without flaws. When angered, he can become mean and rude, and has been described by other characters as something of a spoiled brat. Despite his outward bravado, he has a vulnerable side that is revealed through his deep-seated desire to be a hero like his stepbrother and his need for approval and connection.

At the beginning of the story, Kensuke is investigating a case when he encounters Yoshio Kobayashi, a mysterious boy whose body is surrounded by a strange mist that prevents him from dying, creating an impenetrable barrier. Intrigued by Kobayashi’s power and his nihilistic desire to die, Kensuke makes him a promise: if Kobayashi joins the Boy Detectives Club, Kensuke will help find a way to end his torment. Underneath this arrangement, Kensuke’s true motivation is to give Kobayashi a reason to live and experience joy, rather than to actually help him die. He buys Kobayashi food, keeps him company, and is the first person to take a genuine interest in the isolated boy.

Kensuke’s role in the story is central as he drives the initial plot forward and acts as an emotional anchor for Kobayashi. Their bond is deep and complex. Kobayashi, despite his desire for death, finds his shield lowering around Kensuke, which is interpreted as a sign that he subconsciously wants to live when they are together. Kobayashi eventually throws himself in front of a bullet meant for Kensuke, an act that demonstrates how much he values their friendship.

A major turning point in Kensuke’s development involves his search for his missing stepbrother, Haruhiko. Frustrated that the famous detective Akechi refuses to help him find Haruhiko, Kensuke’s resolve weakens. This pressure, combined with the revelation that Akechi knew his brother’s whereabouts all along, leads Kensuke to be captured and brainwashed by the villainous Twenty Faces. He is manipulated into luring Akechi into a trap.

Following this incident, Kensuke experiences psychological distress resulting from the brainwashing and kidnapping. Feeling unsupported by his friends in the detective club and dealing with the collapse of his idealized image of his brother, he falls into a depressive state. He isolates himself from the group and befriends a young man named Hide, who leads a gang of hooligans. This friendship helps Kensuke begin to recover his old self, though he struggles with feelings of failure.

Kensuke’s arc is a subversion of the standard cheerful anime hero trope. His optimism and determination are seriously tested and broken over the course of the narrative, forcing him to confront the limits of his ideals and the psychological toll of his actions. He eventually overcomes these challenges, reconciling with Kobayashi and officially becoming a full member of the newly established Boy Detectives Club.

In terms of abilities, Kensuke does not possess supernatural powers like Kobayashi. Instead, he relies on his physical fitness, considerable muscle tone, and natural athleticism. He is a practical member of the club, skilled in using various gadgets and unafraid to wield firearms when the situation calls for it. His greatest strength, however, is his unwavering determination and ability to act decisively in the face of danger.
