Justin Briner
Description
Justin Briner is an American voice actor known for his extensive work in English-language dubs of anime series and films, primarily associated with Funimation and Crunchyroll. Born in Maryland in 1991, he developed an interest in performance and later studied theater at the University of North Texas, which laid the foundation for his career in voice acting. He entered the voice acting industry around 2012 and quickly became a prominent figure in the Dallas-Fort Worth dubbing community.
Briner's career gained significant momentum in 2015 with his first major lead role as Mikaela Hyakuya in the dark fantasy series Seraph of the End. That same year, he also voiced the protagonist Qwenthur Barbotage in the mecha anime Heavy Object, a performance that was noted for making the character instantly likable and helping to carry the series. He continued to secure lead roles in a variety of shows, including Elam in The Heroic Legend of Arslan and Justice Akatsuka in Taboo Tattoo.
His most iconic and career-defining role came in 2016 when he was cast as Izuku Midoriya, the main protagonist of the massively popular superhero anime My Hero Academia. Briner's portrayal of the earnest and determined young hero has been met with widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers noting that he and his Japanese counterpart perfectly capture the character's optimistic nerdiness and heroic attitude. The role has become his signature, spanning multiple seasons of the television series as well as several feature films, including My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, and World Heroes' Mission. His work on the show has led to numerous convention appearances and panel discussions alongside fellow cast members.
Beyond his work in My Hero Academia, Briner has demonstrated considerable range by taking on a wide array of characters across different genres. His filmography includes the role of the calculating Kiyotaka Ayanokoji in Classroom of the Elite, the cowardly but skilled Ginro in Dr. Stone, the mysterious Sho Kusakabe in Fire Force, and the mischievous supernatural being Hanako-kun in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. He has also voiced characters in popular long-running series such as Luck Voltia in Black Clover, Niko in Nanbaka, and Edward Midford in Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. His versatility is further showcased by his brief but memorable performance as Popuko in the chaotic comedy Pop Team Epic. In addition to his on-screen work, Briner has also contributed behind the scenes, serving as the head writer for the ADR script of Rio: Rainbow Gate!.
Throughout his career, Briner has frequently collaborated with other voice actors and directors within the Funimation talent pool, becoming a familiar and respected presence in the industry. He has also ventured into video game voice work, with notable roles including Ichi in the acclaimed indie game Cibele and reprising his role as Izuku Midoriya in games like My Hero One's Justice 2. With a career marked by a breakout leading role in one of the most successful anime of the decade and a consistently high volume of work across a diverse spectrum of series, Justin Briner has established himself as a leading voice actor in contemporary anime localization.
