Description
Hanako-kun is the ghost who haunts the third stall of the girls' bathroom on the third floor of the old building at Kamome Academy, known as the seventh of the school's Seven Mysteries. His real name from when he was alive was Amane Yugi, a middle school student who attended the same academy and died in 1969. He appears as a young boy of about thirteen or fourteen years old, standing roughly 150 centimeters tall, with disheveled black hair and bright golden eyes. He wears an old-fashioned black gakuran uniform with gold buttons, a white collared shirt, red socks, and a matching black cap, which distinguishes him from the traditional female image associated with the Hanako-san legend. A piece of paper talisman marked with the character for seal is affixed to his left cheek, and his body is somewhat transparent, betraying his nature as a spirit. He is often accompanied by two floating, spherical spirits called hakujoudai, one red and one green, which assist him in various tasks.
On the surface, Hanako-kun presents a personality that is cheerful, playful, and expressive, frequently joking around and teasing those close to him, particularly his human assistant Nene Yashiro and the young exorcist Kou Minamoto. He can be mischievous and occasionally makes comments that are impish or slightly inappropriate, yet he does so with a childlike goofiness and underlying sweetness. This outward carefree demeanor, however, masks a much more mysterious and profoundly heavy past, and he has moments of being unexpectedly serious, sad, or even cruel. Hanako habitually conceals his true feelings and negative emotions behind a smile, making his thoughts difficult for even his friends to guess, and he becomes easily embarrassed when the conversation turns to himself. Despite his evasiveness, he genuinely cares for his companions, showing deep concern and protectiveness, especially when Nene is in danger.
Haunted by a grave sin he committed during his life, Hanako's primary motivation is atonement. He wields a kitchen knife as his weapon, which is directly linked to the life he took; he admits openly to being a murderer, stating that no amount of atonement can truly erase that fact, though he also implies that simply being exorcised would be an escape from his responsibility. It is revealed that the person he killed was his own younger twin brother, Tsukasa. After his death, Hanako became a supernatural being bound to the school and was given the role of the leader of the Seven Mysteries by a being referred to as God, who promised that his sins could be forgiven if he fulfilled his duties. Consequently, his role is to maintain the delicate balance between humans and supernaturals at Kamome Academy, investigating distorted rumors and managing other wayward spirits. He is known for granting the wishes of those who summon him, but always in exchange for something precious, with Nene Yashiro being a prime example as he grants her wish in return for her labor as his assistant.
As the protagonist, Hanako-kun's role in the story is intrinsically tied to Nene Yashiro, whose fate becomes bound to his when he consumes a mermaid scale to weaken her curse, transforming her wish for love into a wish to remain human. He makes her his assistant, forcing her to help clean the bathroom and accompany him on his duties, but he also becomes deeply invested in her well-being, especially after discovering her lifespan is critically short. Their relationship evolves from a transactional contract to a close friendship and eventually into romantic feelings, with Hanako becoming jealous when Nene pays attention to others and ultimately sharing a kiss with her. His relationship with Kou Minamoto begins antagonistically, as Kou is from a family of exorcists, but quickly transforms into a friendly rivalry or frenemy-ship, with Hanako admiring Kou's kindness and having high hopes for his future as an exorcist. In contrast, his relationship with his living past self's teacher, Tsuchigomori, is one of the few connections to his human life, as Tsuchigomori knows the secret of his past. The other Seven Mysteries generally dislike him and often refer to him with nasty names, reflecting his isolation as their leader. His most fraught relationship is with his twin brother Tsukasa, now a powerful and malevolent supernatural entity who seems to act on opposing beliefs to Hanako's mission of maintaining order.
Throughout the narrative, Hanako-kun's development is marked by a gradual unveiling of his tragic past as Amane Yugi, a boy who loved astronomy and dreamed of going to the moon but was often found bruised and injured. Despite his powerful and often dangerous abilities, including manipulating reality within his boundary, inducing sleep, erasing memories, and using his hakujoudai for surveillance and combat, his emotional journey is one of learning to accept help and care for others again. He struggles with immense guilt and a self-perception as broken, yet through his bonds with Nene and Kou, he begins to find value in his continued existence and allows himself to care deeply, even as he pursues a plan to destroy all the yorishiro of the Seven Mysteries to have his wish granted by God, a path that brings him into direct conflict with his brother and his own past.
