Description
Qwenthur Barbotage is the central protagonist of the anime Heavy Object. He is a seventeen-year-old civilian student serving with the Legitimacy Kingdom's 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion as a trainee mechanic, with the ambition of one day becoming a designer of Objects, the enormous armored war machines that define the conflict of his world. He comes to an Alaskan military base as a foreign student specifically to study multipurpose Objects, and unlike many of the soldiers around him, he does not come from an elite military background. His position in the army is built on technical knowledge and enthusiasm rather than family status or combat training.

In personality, Qwenthur is kind, polite, and instinctively protective of others, with a chivalrous streak that often puts him in harm's way for the sake of people he feels responsible for. He is also exceptionally quick-witted and intellectual, with a relentless curiosity about how Objects work and how they can be beaten. He remains surprisingly calm under pressure, tends to keep an optimistic outlook even in life-threatening situations, and approaches problems with logic and creativity rather than brute force. His strong sense of justice and willingness to take personal risks make him an unusual soldier, one who relies on his mind as his primary weapon.

Qwenthur's main motivation is his fascination with Object technology and his dream of designing better machines, but his goals expand as he is drawn into real combat. He comes to believe that ordinary people should not be helpless against overwhelming weapons and that human ingenuity can overcome technologically superior forces. This belief leads him to volunteer for extremely dangerous missions that a conventional soldier would never attempt, driven by a desire to protect his comrades and prove that individual effort still matters in a war dominated by giant machines.

His role in the story begins when he and his best friend Havia Winchell successfully destroy an Object belonging to an enemy force called the Water Strider, using improvised explosives and careful analysis rather than another Object. This achievement overturns the assumption that only an Object can destroy an Object, and it makes the pair central to a series of high-risk operations throughout the war. From that point on, Qwenthur serves as the strategic brain behind many victories, often personally infiltrating enemy territory or placing explosive charges to bring down machines that should be untouchable.

His most important relationship is with Havia Winchell, his closest friend and constant partner. The two complement each other effectively, with Qwenthur providing the plans and technical insight while Havia supplies frontline support, and their friendship is defined by mutual trust and constant bickering. Qwenthur also forms a significant bond with Milinda Brantini, the elite pilot of the Legitimacy Kingdom's Object known as Baby Magnum, after he saves her during the operation that destroyed the Water Strider. Their connection bridges the gap between ordinary soldiers and the privileged elites who pilot Objects. His commanding officer, Frolaytia Capistrano, also plays an important part in his military career, assigning him to the missions that push him to his limits.

Over the course of the series, Qwenthur develops from an ambitious student into a battle-hardened soldier. He becomes more confident in his own judgment, accepts growing responsibility for the lives of those around him, and matures into someone who understands the harsh realities of war while still holding onto his ideals. His repeated successes force the militaries of his world to reconsider the value of conventional soldiers, and he comes to be regarded as an exceptionally capable field operator despite having no elite lineage or personal combat strength.

In terms of abilities, Qwenthur is not a physically powerful fighter. His strengths lie in his analytical mind, his ability to process technical information quickly, and his talent for spotting weak points in Object designs, sometimes simply by reading manuals or observing enemy behavior. He is especially skilled in the use of HAND AXE explosive charges, which he employs to sabotage targets from within. His greatest asset is his strategic creativity, allowing him to devise unconventional solutions that turn impossible situations into victories, and his courage ensures that he follows through on those plans even when they place him directly in danger.
