Description
Kiyotaka Ayanokōji is the main protagonist of Classroom of the Elite and a second-year student at the Advanced Nurturing High School. He is a young man of average height with brown hair, brown eyes, and a fair complexion, typically seen in the standard school uniform. When outside of school, he often wears a white hoodie over a green and orange striped shirt with brown pants. Despite his unassuming appearance, he possesses an incredibly well-built physique, a result of his harsh upbringing, which has been noted by observant classmates like Suzune Horikita.

His past is the most defining aspect of his character. Ayanokōji is the most successful survivor of the White Room, a secret and brutal educational facility founded by his father, Atsuomi Ayanokōji, designed to create perfect human leaders by pushing children to their absolute limits. After managing to escape his father's control with the help of an associate, he enrolled in the Advanced Nurturing High School seeking a normal, peaceful life. To avoid attention, he deliberately scored exactly 50 out of 100 on every subject of the entrance exam, which resulted in his placement in the lowest-ranked Class D. By his second year, due to various machinations from opposing forces like the acting director Tsukishiro, his class is designated as Class 2-D.

Personality-wise, Ayanokōji presents himself as an inconspicuous, reserved, and emotionally detached student with poor communication skills. He speaks in a monotone voice and maintains a blank, indifferent expression, rarely showing any signs of genuine feeling. This exterior, however, masks a deeply calculating and ruthless mind. His upbringing has conditioned him to view human relationships transactionally, famously stating that all people are nothing but tools, and that winning is everything, regardless of the sacrifices required. While he occasionally helps his classmates and keeps his promises, his motivations are almost always strategic, aimed at manipulating the school environment from the shadows to his own advantage. His desire to experience a normal life is in constant conflict with his ingrained nature as a product of the White Room, forcing him to suppress his true abilities while simultaneously orchestrating complex schemes to protect his freedom and achieve his hidden objectives.

Ayanokōji’s abilities are unparalleled within the school. Intellectually, he is a genius strategist and a master manipulator. He can predict outcomes several steps ahead, accurately analyze the personalities and weaknesses of others, and exploit the school's complex rules to his benefit. He is exceptionally perceptive, quickly deducing truths that others miss. His physical capabilities are equally extraordinary, honed through the White Room’s rigorous training. He is a highly skilled martial artist with superhuman reflexes, speed, endurance, and strength. He has effortlessly evaded attacks from the highly capable Student Council President Manabu Horikita and has single-handedly and brutally defeated multiple skilled fighters, including Kakeru Ryūen, Mio Ibuki, and Albert Yamada, while sustaining no injuries himself.

During the events of the second year, Ayanokōji continues to navigate the school's intense special exams while facing new threats. A new class of first-year students has arrived, and there are rumors that one of them is also a survivor of the White Room, sent specifically to challenge or retrieve him. This forces him to become more active in his machinations. In his role, he maintains several key relationships. He has an ambiguous alliance with his classmate Suzune Horikita, whom he helps in her quest to reach Class A, though he primarily views her as a pawn whose growth he can direct. He is in a strategic romantic relationship with Kei Karuizawa, having manipulated her past trauma to bind her to him as his ultimate tool and now his partner, a connection that has become a central part of his life. He also forms a close, more genuine social circle with the Ayanokōji Group, including Haruka Hasebe and Airi Sakura, though he maintains a degree of emotional distance even from them. His development is subtle but significant, marked by small moments of self-reflection and a growing, if conflicted, acknowledgment of his own desires for genuine human connection, even as he continues to scheme and manipulate to ensure his victory and freedom.
