Description
9'α is a fictional character from the anime DARLING in the FRANXX, serving as the charismatic and enigmatic leader of the special forces unit known as the 9's, which operates directly under the authority of APE. His physical appearance is that of a youthful, slight-framed boy with short, light blond or golden hair and green eyes. Unlike the standard gray uniforms worn by other parasite units, 9'α wears a distinctive white and gold outfit that signifies his elite status. While piloting his personalized FRANXX, the Nine Model, he manifests holographic golden horns that resemble those of a klaxosaur.

The personality of 9'α is defined by a carefully maintained facade of polite and elegant behavior that masks a deeply contemptuous and sarcastic nature. He almost always wears a smile, but his words are frequently laced with condescension and hidden barbs, creating an unsettling and arrogant presence. As a member of APE's elite guard, he possesses an immense sense of superiority over ordinary parasites, particularly those of Squad 13, whom he often dismisses as mere "humans" driven by inconvenient and repulsive emotions. He is fundamentally incapable of understanding human customs such as eating for pleasure, kissing, or the desire for reproduction, viewing these behaviors as illogical and dirty. Despite his claims of being emotionless and flawless, 9'α exhibits a curious and contradictory inner world; he experiences jealousy, frustration, and intense anger, proving he is not devoid of feelings. His curiosity about Squad 13, particularly about what makes them different from his own kind, is a driving force that disturbs his otherwise orderly existence.

The primary motivation for 9'α is his absolute and unquestioning loyalty to the Seven Sages, whom he refers to as "Papa". He exists to carry out their orders and fulfill his duties as a weapon against the klaxosaurs, believing this to be the sole reason for his birth. His role in the story is initially that of an antagonist to the protagonists of Squad 13. He is sent to observe them, report on their deviant behavior to the higher authorities, and enforce APE's will. He performs one of his most pivotal actions when he intervenes in the secret wedding of two Squad 13 members, Mitsuru and Kokoro, apprehending them and delivering them to the Seven Sages to have their memories forcibly erased and rewritten as punishment for their transgression.

The key relationships of 9'α are complex and revealing. His official partner within the 9's is 9'ζ, though he commands the entire unit with high authority. He shares a particularly fraught relationship with Zero Two, whose real designation within the 9's was 9'ι (Iota). Despite being genetically created from her DNA, making him a kind of clone, he expresses a mixture of disdain and bitter fascination for her. He refuses to call her by her chosen name, instead using her old code "Iota" to remind her of her identity as a weapon, and frequently denigrates her attempts to live as a human with Squad 13, calling her a "monster in human skin". In contrast, he shows a marked interest in Ichigo, the leader of Squad 13, whom he finds "proud and dignified" and even flirts with on occasion, though his intentions are a blend of genuine curiosity and condescending amusement. He is also intensely interested in Hiro, the only stamen known to have survived piloting with Zero Three times, and observes him closely.

The character of 9'α undergoes significant development, particularly after the truth of the Seven Sages is revealed. When the Sages expose themselves as an alien race called VIRM and abandon Earth, 9'α's entire reason for being is shattered, yet he doggedly continues to follow his final orders to fight. This rigid devotion begins to crack when he witnesses the deaths of his comrades, 9'δ and 9'ε, at the hands of VIRM. In that moment, he abandons his detached demeanor and flies into a rage, attacking the enemy indiscriminately to avenge his fallen teammates. This event proves that he values his bonds with the other 9's, even if he cannot articulate it. Later, stripped of the maintenance provided by the Seven Sages, his body begins to fail, and he refuses to eat ordinary food out of principle. Despite his weakened state, he volunteers to accompany Hiro on a final, desperate mission to Mars to fight VIRM. In this final battle, he serves as the pistil, or female-role pilot, for Hiro, demonstrating the 9's unique versatility in being able to fulfill either piloting position. Ultimately, 9'α makes the conscious decision to sacrifice himself, ejecting Hiro from their FRANXX to safety before self-destructing his own unit to destroy the enemy and ensure Hiro can reach Zero Two.

As a member of APE's elite, 9'α possesses exceptional abilities as a FRANXX pilot. He is a highly skilled strategist and combatant, capable of冷静地 analyzing situations and leading his squad to victory in high-difficulty operations. His combat prowess is such that he can single-handedly fight VIRM weaponry even before the final battle. A notable feature of his unit and his training is the ability to serve as both a stamen (the traditional male position) and a pistil (the traditional female position), granting him and the 9's a level of adaptability that surpasses ordinary parasites. He pilots the advanced white FRANXX known as the Nine Model, which is armed with a lance-like weapon called the Amazon Pike.
