Description
Yamada Asaemon Fuchi is the ninth-ranked executioner of the Yamada clan, serving as the assigned monitor and executioner for the notorious death-row convict Tamiya Gantetsusai. He is a young man of twenty years with a small, diminutive stature, standing at only 148 centimeters tall. His appearance is distinctive, featuring a yellow, bowl-cut hairstyle with long bangs that often fall over his eyes, while the rest of his hair is tied into a small topknot. Behind his bangs are large, round eyes with noticeable dark shadows underneath, a physical sign of the long nights he spends dedicated to his work and research. His small frame and unusual appearance have earned him the nickname Puchi, derived from the word petite. He wears the standard white robes of an Asaemon with a dark kataginu vest and notably carries his two swords strapped to his back rather than at his hip, as his waist is reserved for a set of dissection tools.
Fuchi’s personality is defined by his rational, no-nonsense approach to life, viewing matters he deems unscientific or illogical with open disdain. He is a pragmatic thinker with sound judgment, preferring to gather information and wear down enemies to extract intelligence rather than engage in pointless combat. He holds immense pride in the Yamada clan and its heritage, refusing to tolerate any disparaging remarks about it. While seemingly cold and detached on the surface, his core is driven by a passionate, almost obsessive, dedication to the study of human anatomy. Unlike most of his peers who focus on testing swords and performing executions, Fuchi views the clan's work as a means to advance medical science, wholeheartedly believing that anatomical research can save lives.
This passion often manifests as a curious blend of a mad scientist and a devoted healer. He can become giddily excited and cackle with delight at the prospect of dissecting a strange new creature, such as the monstrous Sōshin or the immortal Lord Tensen, hoping to unlock their secrets. He finds satisfaction even in experiencing pain from a new attack, viewing it as a chance to revolutionize medicine. Despite this morbid fascination, Fuchi is deeply kind and selfless. His pursuit of medical knowledge is driven by a desire to help others, and he consistently puts the lives of his allies before his own. He forms emotional connections even with convicted criminals, coming to understand that crime and evil are not the same and that everyone shares a fundamental will to live.
Fuchi's primary motivation for joining the perilous mission to the island of Shinsenkyo is twofold. Officially, he is there to monitor Gantetsusai and assist in finding the Elixir of Life. Personally, he is driven by the unprecedented scientific opportunity the island presents. The existence of immortal beings and strange flora and fauna offers him a chance to conduct research that could advance medicine beyond his wildest dreams. His role in the story is that of a supporting character who serves as both a combatant and the de facto battlefield medic for the survivors. He is rarely on the front lines of the most powerful attacks, but his medical expertise and analytical mind are crucial for the group's survival.
His most significant relationship is with his assigned charge, Tamiya Gantetsusai. Though he finds Gantetsusai’s obsession with fighting and becoming a legend ridiculous, Fuchi loyally treats his wounds, fashions a hook to replace his severed hand, and stands by him in battle. He also forms a strong working alliance with the ninja Gabimaru, the two trusting each other due to their shared pragmatism. Fuchi helps Gabimaru understand the nature of Tao by interpreting the child Mei's cryptic words and provides medical care after brutal fights. He shares a bond with his fellow Asaemon Senta as a fellow scholar, and Senta's death deeply affects him, strengthening his resolve to prevent needless loss of life.
Throughout the story, Fuchi undergoes notable development. Initially driven purely by scientific curiosity, his experiences and the deaths of his comrades teach him the true value of life in a way his studies never could. This transforms his passion from a clinical obsession into a deeply personal mission to ensure the surviving group, both criminals and executioners, can return home safely. In his final moments, after being fatally wounded, he chooses to use his remaining strength to treat Gantetsusai's injuries rather than his own, demonstrating the ultimate expression of his selfless nature.
In terms of abilities, Fuchi wields two unique swords designed specifically for dissection. One has a dramatically upturned tip, and the other resembles a saw, making them ideal for precision cutting through flesh and bone. In combat, he exploits his small, light frame to move with high speed and agility, using his anatomical knowledge to target tendons, muscles, and vital points with a surgeon's accuracy rather than relying on brute force. While he cannot sense or utilize the mystical energy known as Tao, he compensates with his vast medical knowledge. He is a skilled field medic, capable of treating severe injuries, administering drugs, and even using parts of his own sword, like the tsuba, as an improvised eyepatch for Gantetsusai. His unique blend of scientific obsession and genuine compassion makes him an invaluable ally and a memorable member of the Yamada clan.
