Description
Luciel is the main protagonist of The Great Cleric. In his previous life, he was a Japanese salaryman who was shot and killed on the day he was about to receive a promotion. A deity takes pity on him and reincarnates him into the fantasy world of Galdardia as a fifteen-year-old boy with healing magic. He chooses the name Luciel and the healer class, hoping to live a long and peaceful life. Physically, he has an European appearance with chiseled features, silver hair, and pale purple eyes; as the story progresses, he grows his hair out and ties it into a ponytail.
Luciel's personality is defined by a relentless work ethic and a genuine desire to help others. He is humble and remains largely unaware of his own growing reputation as a legendary healer. Having witnessed the corruption of the Healers' Guild, which charges exorbitant fees and sometimes lets the poor die, he vows to reform the system and provide affordable, accessible healing to everyone in need. This moral conviction drives most of his actions throughout the series. He is also notably pragmatic and cautious, a remnant of his salaryman mindset, which pushes him to train excessively to avoid dying a second time.
Luciel's journey begins in the town of Merratoni, where he registers with the Healers' Guild. After failing to save a patient, he becomes determined to grow stronger. He joins the Adventurers' Guild and undergoes brutal, daily physical training under Brod, the guild master and a retired world-class warrior. Brod's methods are punishing—he beats Luciel repeatedly to force him to heal in real time—but they forge Luciel's physical resilience and combat instincts. Luciel also consumes a foul-smelling potion known as Substance X, prepared by the beastman chef Gulgar, which drastically boosts his stats and mana. This mixture becomes a staple of his training regimen.
Luciel's role in the story evolves from a novice healer trying to survive into a high-ranking exorcist and a key figure within the Holy Church. He relocates to the Holy City of Saint Shurule, where he trains with the Valkyrie Paladin Corps under Captain Lumina. Lumina is the first person he meets after reincarnation, and she becomes his primary romantic interest and political ally within the Church hierarchy. Their relationship deepens from mentor and protégé to mutual trust and affection. Other important connections include the receptionist Monica, who harbors feelings for him and supports his early days at the guild; the guild receptionist Nanaella; the item shop owner Cattleya, who helps him navigate the politics of the Holy City; and the beastman brothers Gulgar and Galba, who provide practical support and instruction in monster biology and butchery.
Throughout the series, Luciel undergoes significant development. He begins as a fearful survivor, driven solely by the desire not to die. Through relentless training and repeated real-world challenges, he matures into a confident and powerful S-rank healer and exorcist. He learns to balance his healing abilities with combat, becoming a formidable fighter in his own right. His ultimate goal shifts from personal survival to reforming the Church and cleansing the Labyrinth of Shurule, which has become a source of danger and corruption. Despite his power, he remains approachable and dedicated to his principles, often shocking others with his selflessness and his willingness to endure extreme hardship to improve himself.
In terms of abilities, Luciel possesses exceptional holy healing magic, which he uses to treat injuries and diseases at little to no cost. He also develops strong physical combat skills from Brod's training, making him capable of fighting monsters directly. His consumption of Substance X allows him to rapidly increase his mana pool and physical parameters, enabling him to cast high-level healing spells repeatedly and endure prolonged battles. As an exorcist, he gains the ability to cleanse cursed areas and defeat undead or demonic entities. His dedication to training and his unique combination of magic and martial prowess make him one of the most powerful individuals in the world, though he rarely acknowledges his own strength.
