Description
Mamoru Suzuhara, an introverted high school student, retreats into historical texts and military manuals to evade social engagement, his reserved demeanor rooted in insecurity over relationships—particularly with childhood friend Aya Chiyono, whose impending relocation to Tokyo spurs his poorly conveyed plea to escape together. Misread as a collective rebellion rather than a personal appeal, his proposal sets in motion a chain of events where his tactical expertise, drawn from historical stratagems, elevates him from the periphery to an unexpected leadership role during the group’s takeover of an abandoned coal plant. Tasked with defending their refuge against authorities pursuing Mallet, an undocumented Thai child they shelter, Mamoru’s strategic acumen becomes vital to their resistance.

Forced to grapple with his aversion to emotional exposure, he oscillates between confessing his feelings for Aya and managing the group’s escalating tensions, his personal desires repeatedly eclipsed by crises. Public scrutiny and internal discord test his resilience as he harnesses social media to outmaneuver adult opposition, transforming from passive observer to pivotal strategist. A catalyst emerges through familial circumstance—his younger sister’s offhand mention of Aya’s departure—propelling his initial defiance. While his romantic arc lacks resolution, the narrative prioritizes his incremental emotional fortitude over tidy conclusions, framing growth not in victory but in persistent engagement with vulnerability and responsibility.
