TV-Series
Description
Edward Midford is the elder son of the Marquess of Midford, making him the older brother of Elizabeth Midford and a maternal cousin to Ciel Phantomhive. As a member of British nobility and the heir to his family’s prestigious title, he is deeply instilled with the values of a knight, including a strong sense of honor, courage, and integrity. He takes his responsibilities seriously, believing that the strong have a duty to protect the weak, a principle he has demonstrated by prioritizing the safety of women and children in dangerous situations.
In terms of personality, Edward is earnest, hardworking, and modest, often viewing himself as an unexceptional individual when compared to the natural talents he sees in those around him. This includes his sister Elizabeth, whom he adores and fiercely protects, and his cousin Ciel, whose ability to manage the Phantomhive household at a young age he genuinely respects. He is known for his strong, sometimes overbearing, sister complex, frequently becoming agitated when Ciel is in her company. Despite his tough exterior, he possesses a degree of ingenuousness, which makes him susceptible to deception and means he can sometimes miss what is right in front of him.
During the Public School Arc, Edward is a student at Weston College and serves as the Prefect's Fag for the Green Lion dormitory, under the prefect Herman Greenhill. He is a key figure in this arc, acting as a direct link between the student body and the elite prefects known as the P4. Initially, he is disappointed in Ciel when it appears he has broken a promise, but he is quick to apologize and commend him once the truth about another student's treachery is revealed. Edward participates in the annual cricket tournament, where his athleticism and strategic mind are on full display, and he notably refuses to resort to dishonorable tactics to win. He also plays a role in the investigation into missing students, providing Ciel with crucial information about dorm transfers and expressing suspicion about Ciel’s true purpose at the school, directly asking if he is there as the Queen’s Watchdog.
Edward’s key relationships heavily define his character. His relationship with his sister Elizabeth is the most prominent, driving much of his emotional outbursts and protective actions. He sees himself as her guardian and is quick to anger at any perceived slight against her honor. With his cousin Ciel, Edward has a more complex dynamic. While he is publicly hostile towards him as his sister’s fiancé and often threatens him, he also holds a deep-seated admiration for Ciel’s strength and leadership. He views Ciel as a talented person he can learn from. Edward also shares a strong bond of loyalty and respect with his own dormitory prefect, Herman Greenhill, whom he works hard to assist and emulate.
Over the course of the arc, Edward experiences significant development. He is forced to confront a major failure when he realizes his respected seniors, the P4, have been complicit in covering up horrible crimes to protect the school’s traditions. This revelation shakes his faith in the authority figures he has so diligently strived to imitate. When Herman Greenhill is expelled, Edward is appointed as the new Prefect of the Green House. This new responsibility brings with it a personal fear that he might one day fall into the same trap of blindly adhering to tradition and justifying wrongdoing, showing a new level of self-awareness and a desire to forge his own path as a leader.
Notable abilities include his athletic prowess and skill in swordsmanship, which reflect his training as a knight. On the cricket field, he demonstrates a keen ability to analyze his opponents' strategies and is a fast learner, able to replicate techniques like the "Purple Burnout" simply by observing them. According to another character, this ability to learn stems from his genuine respect for those he considers superior to himself, modeling his behavior on them without envy. He considers himself a genius of hard work rather than natural talent, a quality that defines his approach to his duties and personal growth.
