Description
Kozuki Momonosuke is the heir to the Kozuki family, the former royal clan of the Wano Country region known as Kuri, and the son of the legendary samurai Kozuki Oden and his wife Kozuki Toki. Born with a direct bloodline to the ancient clan that carved the Poneglyphs, Momonosuke is introduced as a young boy of eight years old who has been thrown forward in time by his mother’s Toki Toki no Mi ability, allowing him to escape the destruction of Oden’s rebellion and the takeover of Wano by the shogun Kurozumi Orochi and the pirate Kaido. Though his physical age is eight, his lived experience is that of a child who has witnessed immense tragedy, including his father’s public execution and his mother’s death shortly after sending him and his retainers into the future.

Personality wise, Momonosuke initially presents as arrogant, petulant, and prone to grandiose claims, often declaring himself the future shogun of Wano while simultaneously displaying cowardice and a tendency to weep or hide from danger. This contradiction stems from his overwhelming sense of responsibility clashing with his actual childhood vulnerability. Despite his fear, he possesses a deep and genuine sense of honor, a strong attachment to his retainers, and a growing resolve not to let his father’s legacy die. He is also prone to childish impulses, including a well noted tendency to ask to see women’s breasts or behave in a lecherous manner, traits that are played for comedy but also signal his immaturity. Under pressure, he becomes serious, introspective, and capable of showing great empathy for the suffering people of Wano.

Momonosuke’s core motivation is to reclaim Wano from Kaido and Orochi, restore his family’s name, and fulfill his father’s wish to open the country’s borders. Unlike a typical revenge driven character, his goal is less about personal hatred and more about ending the pollution, starvation, and oppression inflicted on Wano’s citizens. He seeks to become a ruler worthy of Oden’s example, though he is deeply insecure about whether he can ever match his father’s strength or charisma.

In the story, Momonosuke serves as a central figure in the Wano Country arc and a key ally to the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly after being rescued on Punk Hazard. His role evolves from a helpless victim and a burden to a symbolic leader and a tactical asset. During the Raid on Onigashima, he undergoes a transformative moment when Shinobu, using her mature mature ability, forcibly ages his body to that of a twenty eight year old, granting him an adult physique to better control his inherited powers and lead his people. Despite his older body, his mind remains that of a child, which creates a poignant dynamic of having the form of a leader while still growing into the role emotionally.

Key relationships define Momonosuke’s arc. His bond with Roronoa Zoro is particularly significant, as Zoro served as his unofficial protector and mentor in swordsmanship, recognizing the boy’s courage beneath his fear. His relationship with Luffy is equally critical: Luffy treats him not as a lord but as a friend and fellow brat, constantly demanding Momonosuke act like a man and speak his orders clearly. The dynamic with his father’s former retainers, especially Kin’emon and Kanjuro, is one of deep loyalty and grief, though betrayal from Kanjuro wounds him greatly. He shares a unique connection with Kaido, as Kaido murdered his father and later reveals that Momonosuke shares the same Devil Fruit lineage—an artificial version of Kaido’s own Azure Dragon fruit, created by Vegapunk. This fruit, which Momonosuke ate unknowingly as a child, allows him to transform into a pink scaled dragon, fly, create flame clouds to lift entire islands, and eventually rival Kaido in the air.

Development wise, Momonosuke matures from a screaming, dependent child into a decisive figure who publicly defies Kaido, commands the Samurai army, and issues the order to open Wano’s borders after the war. His final act as a character in the Wano arc is to decline joining the Straw Hats or being propped up solely by their victory, instead choosing to rule with his own will and lead a newly freed but devastated nation.

Notable abilities include his artificial Mythical Zoan type Devil Fruit, which grants him flight, enhanced strength, a dragon’s body, and the power to generate flame clouds for levitation. He also possesses the Kozuki clan’s ability to read and carve Poneglyphs, though he has not yet mastered this skill. As an adult in body, he wields Oden’s remaining sword, Ame no Habakiri, and displays formidable but untrained physical power. His greatest ability, however, is his inherited will and his capacity to inspire loyalty among samurai who see in him the ghost of Oden.
