Description
Hayato Shinomiya is a first-year high school student and a key member of the group of boys who become romantically interested in Kae Serinuma. He is one of the younger members of the main cast, being an underclassman to Kae and several of his rivals.
In terms of background, Shinomiya is a responsible and diligent student who serves on both the Nursing Committee and the Student Council. This position reflects his knowledge in treating injuries and helping sick students. Physically, he is of average height but is notably shorter and has a more slender, effeminate build compared to the other male leads. His appearance is often described as bishonen, or beautiful boy, and he can easily be mistaken for a girl if dressed in feminine clothing. He has light brown hair and brownish-green eyes. A glimpse into his past reveals that he did not have many friends during his childhood due to a weak immune system and his effeminate looks, and his pet lizard, Thor, was his only companion for a time.
Shinomiya's personality is a classic example of the tsundere archetype, initially presenting as cold, proud, and blunt. Before Kae's dramatic weight loss, he was rather rude to her, once making an offhand comment that she did not look very injured. This behavior is later understood in the context of his isolated upbringing. However, upon seeing the transformed Kae, he is instantly smitten and develops a significant crush, though he struggles to express his feelings openly. Much of his early motivation stems from a desire to be seen as a man by Kae, who often comments on how good he looks in girls' clothes or places him in scenarios reminiscent of her boys' love fantasies. He frequently attempts to act tough and masculine to compensate for his insecurities, but these efforts often end in humorous failure.
His primary motivation is winning Kae's affection, though this is complicated by his own self-doubt. He feels insecure about his physical strength and courage, believing he does not stand a chance against the more athletic and intimidating personalities of his rivals. This vulnerability makes him one of the more relatable characters, as he constantly grapples with feelings of unworthiness. Despite initially liking Kae only for her looks, he eventually develops genuine feelings for her personality as well, such as when he is encouraged by her admiration for his hard work.
In the story, Shinomiya serves as the more emotionally vulnerable and self-conscious member of the harem. His role becomes more prominent in episodes that delve into his insecurities, such as when he gets lost in the woods during a trip and must be rescued by Kae, only to later redeem himself by protecting her from thugs. He often clashes instantly with Nozomu Nanashima, the group's more aggressive "bad boy," due to their opposing personalities, frequently getting into arguments over Kae. Despite their rivalry, they are sometimes able to put aside their differences to help Kae or when the situation benefits them both.
His relationships with the other characters are distinct. With Kae, he shows his softer dere side exclusively to her, though she frequently compares him to a younger brother rather than a romantic prospect. He has a more caring dynamic with Asuma Mutsumi, who shows him kindness, though Shinomiya often brushes it off due to his pride. Shinomiya rarely gets along with Nanashima, whom he views as a primary rival.
Regarding character development, Shinomiya evolves from a shallow admirer of Kae's new appearance into someone who values her inner qualities. He transitions from being outright rude to her before her transformation to actively protecting her from physical harm. His journey is centered on overcoming his insecurities and learning to assert his masculinity in a way that is authentic to himself rather than purely performative.
As for notable abilities, Shinomiya is academically smart and has a practical knowledge of first aid and medical care thanks to his role on the Nursing Committee. He is also shown to have a hidden resilient side, as he is willing to physically confront those who threaten Kae despite his smaller frame and lack of athletic prowess compared to the other boys.
