Description
Hanako is the main character of the story and the seventh of the Seven Mysteries of Kamome Academy, known as Hanako-san of the Toilet. Contrary to the urban legend that depicts this spirit as a girl in a red skirt, Hanako appears as a young boy with a playful and mischievous demeanor. He has black hair, bright golden eyes, and wears an old-fashioned black school uniform with a cap. On his left cheek, a piece of paper talisman with the word seal is affixed. He is often accompanied by two floating spirit orbs called hakujoudai, one red and one green, which assist him in various tasks such as surveillance and creating a protective cloak. As a ghost bound to the school, his body is somewhat transparent, and he cannot leave the academy grounds.

On the surface, Hanako is friendly, expressive, and enjoys joking around, often teasing his companions, Nene Yashiro and Kou Minamoto. He can be cheeky, make naughty comments, and act in a seemingly carefree or silly manner. However, this cheerful facade hides a much more serious, mysterious, and sometimes even cruel nature. He tends to keep his true feelings hidden, making his thoughts difficult to guess, but he has moments of deep sadness and surprising sincerity. Behind his playful exterior, he is a solitary figure carrying the weight of a heavy past.

Hanako’s true identity is that of a ghost who was once a human boy named Amane Yugi, a middle school student at Kamome Academy in 1969. He was a passionate student of astronomy who dreamed of becoming an astronaut and going to the moon. According to the school's fifth mystery, Tsuchigomori, who was his homeroom teacher, Amane was originally destined to become a science teacher, but he was the only person known to have changed his own future. His life was marked by tragedy; he frequently came to school with bruises and cuts from unknown abuse, and he ultimately died young after killing his younger twin brother, Tsukasa. This act is the sin he carries, symbolized by the kitchen knife he uses as his weapon. After death, Hanako became a supernatural being, taking on the role of the leader of the Seven Mysteries. This position was given to him by a figure known as God, who promised that his sins would be forgiven if he successfully fulfilled his duties to maintain the balance between humans and supernaturals at the school.

Within the story, Hanako’s primary role is to act as the enforcer and leader of the Seven Mysteries. He monitors all the supernaturals on campus and works to ensure the peaceful coexistence of the human and spirit worlds. He is known for granting the wishes of those who summon him, but always in exchange for a price. When Nene Yashiro summons him to make her love come true, circumstances lead to her ingesting a mermaid scale, which curses her. To save her, Hanako alters the terms of her wish and binds her to him as his assistant, a price paid in labor. Together, they work to solve problems caused by rogue supernaturals and investigate strange changes to the school's rumors.

Hanako’s key relationships are central to the narrative. His dynamic with Nene Yashiro is complex; though he frequently teases her and calls her his assistant, he genuinely cares for her and is fiercely protective. When he learns of her shortened lifespan, his motivation to give her a long future becomes a driving force. He forms an unlikely friendship with Kou Minamoto, an exorcist who initially comes to destroy him. Despite their adversarial beginnings, they become allies, with Hanako admiring Kou's inherent kindness. A mysterious and significant relationship exists between him and his deceased twin brother, Tsukasa, which is a source of the series' deep mystery and conflict. He also shares a unique connection with Tsuchigomori, who knows the truth about his past life as Amane and holds his yorishiro.

Throughout the series, Hanako exhibits significant development, particularly in his emotional openness. While he starts as a secretive and self-isolating spirit, his interactions with Nene and Kou gradually cause him to reveal rare moments of vulnerability. He learns to form genuine bonds and his attachment to Nene deepens to the point of romantic affection, even as he struggles with the impossibility of their situation. His character arc revolves around his quest for atonement and the question of whether forgiveness for a past sin is truly attainable.

In terms of abilities, Hanako is the most powerful of the Seven Mysteries. His primary weapon is a kitchen knife, a manifestation of the murder he committed in life. He can summon the two hakujoudai, which can act as remote eyes for surveillance, create a military-style cloak that provides him with protection and immunity from certain attacks. Within his own boundary, the realm of the seventh mystery, he wields significant power and can manipulate reality. As the leader of the Seven Mysteries, he has authority over the other supernaturals at Kamome Academy, even if they often express their dislike for him.
