Description
Eita Semi is a third-year student and a setter for the Shiratorizawa Academy boys' volleyball team, wearing the jersey number 3. He stands at 179.5 centimeters tall, has a relatively large build, and is characterized by his ash-blonde hair with dark tips, contrasting black eyebrows, and sharply shaped brown eyes that are often set in a small scowl.
Semi is a talented and well-known setter who was originally the main setter for Shiratorizawa, having entered the prestigious school on a sports scholarship. However, by his third year, he was replaced in the starting lineup by the younger Kenjirou Shirabu. This change occurred not because of a lack of skill, but because of a fundamental difference in playing philosophy. Semi has a strong desire to show off his own power and abilities on the court, wanting to use his personal skill to break past opposing blockers. While this makes him an aggressive and dynamic player, the coach determined that Shiratorizawa's strategy, which centers on its ace Wakatoshi Ushijima, needed a different type of setter.
Despite being replaced, Semi does not harbor significant bitterness towards Shirabu. He is highly self-aware and acknowledges that the team functions more effectively with Shirabu's style of play, which focuses on safely and consistently delivering the ball to the team's ace and other spikers. He is observant and analytical, often watching the game from the sidelines and offering advice to Shirabu, even if he is sometimes dismissive of it. During the Spring High Preliminary Finals against Karasuno, he calls out to Shirabu to carefully consider how to best support Ushijima, showing his continued engagement and care for the team's success. While he can be annoyed by disrespectful behavior, he also quietly admits when Shirabu makes a good play, demonstrating a recognition of his younger rival's strengths.
Semi has a personality that is more complex than his serious and stoic appearance suggests. He is known to be hot-headed and highly competitive, a trait that sometimes flares up in his interactions with Shirabu. However, he is also sincere and cares about his teammates, getting along well with the other third-years like Wakatoshi Ushijima, Reon Ohira, and Satori Tendou. He appears to be particularly close to Reon, and uses first names when addressing Ushijima, Reon, and the young first-year Tsutomu Goshiki. His friendship with Tendou is based on lighthearted banter, with Tendou often teasing Semi, for instance by telling him his casual clothes are uncool, which has become a recent worry for Semi.
Semi's most notable ability is his powerful and quick jump serve. This skill is so effective that he serves as the team's primary pinch server, entering matches in critical moments specifically to use his serve to score points or throw the opposing team's formation into disarray. His serve is difficult to receive cleanly; even skilled players like Karasuno's Daichi Sawamura and Yuu Nishinoya struggle to pass it perfectly to their setter. His determination to prove his own strength finds an outlet in his serve. He reflects during the match against Karasuno that while the team needs a setter like Shirabu, his own serve is the one thing that is free from those restrictions. He demonstrates this by scoring a service ace immediately after being switched into the intense fifth set.
In his role on the court, when he is not serving, he acts as a substitute setter. He is capable of leading the offense and setting up his hitters to score points, as shown when he sets up Goshiki for a quick point. However, his greatest contribution comes from the service line. His jumping reach is recorded at 325 centimeters, and his player statistics show high marks of four out of five in power, jumping, stamina, and speed, with slightly lower but still competent three out of five ratings for intellect and technique. His technical skill as a setter is high, but his fiery competitiveness and desire to individually overcome blocks is why he does not fit the starting role.
Throughout the course of the story, Semi's development is less about dramatic change and more about a quiet, mature acceptance of his position. He understands his own weaknesses in relation to the team's needs but refuses to completely suppress his nature, instead channeling it into his role as a pinch server. As a third year, following Shiratorizawa's loss to Karasuno, he takes part in the team's farewell ceremony, watching as Ushijima gives a motivational speech to prepare the underclassmen for the next year, marking a graceful end to his high school volleyball career. Information about his life after high school indicates he becomes a public servant and also pursues music as a member of a band.
