Description
Akira Saitō serves as the assistant coach for the Shiratorizawa Academy volleyball team, working alongside the head coach, Tanji Washijō. His primary function is to support the coaching staff and help guide one of the most powerful high school volleyball programs in Miyagi Prefecture.

Saitō appears during the final of the Spring High tournament preliminaries, where his sharp observational skills come to the forefront. While watching Karasuno’s Shouyou Hinata play, he nearly compares the short but incredibly athletic player to the legendary "Little Giant," a former Karasuno star known for defying height disadvantages with impressive jumping ability. However, head coach Washijō cuts him off before he can finish the comparison, reflecting the head coach's complex and dismissive attitude toward Karasuno’s style of play.

Later, Saitō is involved in the Miyagi Prefecture First-Year Selection Training Camp, a special program designed to identify and develop promising young talent from across the region. The camp is held at Shiratorizawa Academy and directed by Coach Washijō. Saitō is listed as a participating staff member for this event. During this camp, he experiences an unfortunate bout of bad luck. After eating oysters the day before the final practice session, he suffers from food poisoning, which forces him to miss the very last day of the training camp. This incident causes him to regret that he was unable to fully observe the players, including Hinata, during the camp’s conclusion.

In terms of his role in the story, Saitō is a minor but notable coaching figure who helps illustrate the broader volleyball ecosystem beyond Karasuno High School. His relationship with the stern and imposing Coach Washijō appears to be professional, with Saitō acting as a quieter, more observant counterpart. His near-comparison of Hinata to the Little Giant shows that he recognizes potential and talent in players that other, more traditional coaches might overlook. His abilities as a coach are implied through his position on the staff of a national-level powerhouse like Shiratorizawa, indicating a strong tactical and technical understanding of the sport. There is no detailed information about his background, personal motivations, or significant development over the course of the series.
