Description
Belkman is a character from the anime Izetta: The Last Witch. He is an officer in the Germanian Imperial Army, holding the rank of Major and later Lieutenant Colonel. He is a member of a special forces unit primarily tasked with intelligence operations and special warfare. A man of average build who wears glasses, his most defining trait is his sharp, analytical mind. He is consistently portrayed as calm, pragmatic, and highly observant, preferring to use logic and reason to assess situations rather than brute force. He is not driven by ideology or patriotism but by a cold, calculating self-interest.

In the story, Belkman is the primary antagonist for much of the series, acting as the strategic mind behind Germania's efforts to counter the power of the protagonist, Izetta. While others view Izetta as an invincible magical weapon, Belkman is among the first to deduce that her powers have limitations and vulnerabilities. He correctly theorizes that she is not all-powerful, questioning why she would not simply fly to the capital to end the war if she were truly unstoppable. His role evolves from a military strategist to a central figure in Germania's secret project to create their own witch, Sophie, a clone of the legendary White Witch. He is present at the masquerade ball where Sophie draws blood from Izetta, a key event that restores Sophie's memories and powers. As a field officer, he is also shown to be a skilled and determined fighter pilot, tasked with intercepting enemy supply planes.

Belkman's primary motivation is self-preservation and maintaining his own position. He is not portrayed as a zealous believer in the Germanian cause. Instead, he navigates the dangerous political landscape of the empire with careful calculation. His key relationships are largely professional. He works closely with his assistant, Rickert, and is shown to care enough to visit Rickert's grave after his death, ensuring he received an honorable burial. He reports directly to Emperor Otto, but this relationship becomes strained. After he successfully deploys Sophie and effectively neutralizes the Eylstadt threat, his success makes him a political liability. Recognizing that the emperor now sees him as too powerful and has sidelined him, Belkman understands he has been marked for elimination.

This realization triggers his most significant development: a calculated defection. When an SS officer attempts to execute Finé and her surviving soldiers on the Emperor's orders, Belkman kills the officer and surrenders to the Eylstadt forces. His motivation for this betrayal is not moral but pragmatic. He explains that if Izetta can defeat Sophie, then she is the most powerful person in the world, and his safest option is to be on her side. He uses his insider knowledge to bargain for his safety, providing critical intelligence about a magical super-bomb and forging documents to help Finé's team infiltrate the Germania peace conference.

Throughout his arc, Belkman does not possess any magical or superhuman abilities. His talents are entirely mundane but exceptionally sharp. His primary ability is his intelligence and strategic acumen. He is a master of analysis, able to piece together information from seemingly minor details to form a complete picture of his enemy's weaknesses. He is also politically savvy, able to read the intentions of his superiors and adapt his plans accordingly to survive. His skills in espionage, piloting, and marksmanship further define him as a highly capable special operations officer. Ultimately, his attempt to defect is not entirely successful, as he is shot in the eye by Captain Basler, a former subordinate, during his escape, leaving him permanently injured.
