Description
Fiine, whose full name is Ortfiné Fredericka von Eylstadt, is the princess and sole heir to the small, neutral alpine kingdom of Eylstadt. She is introduced as the headstrong and capable daughter of the ailing Archduke Rudolf III, which forces her to take on significant political and military responsibilities at a young age. Her name, Finé, is the Italian word for "end" or "finale," a subtle reflection of her central position as her nation's last hope.
Finé is characterized by a sharp intellect, strong will, and a deep sense of duty toward her people, whom she believes have kept her alive through their support. From the very beginning, she defies the archetype of a passive princess, demonstrating quick thinking and courage. During an attempted escape from her Germanian captors, she personally attempts to disarm a soldier and leads the effort rather than relying solely on her bodyguards. Her political acumen is also evident; she is a skilled negotiator willing to offer anything, including a political marriage, to secure her nation's future, and she is capable of maintaining a façade of strength even when her kingdom is on the brink of collapse.
Finé's primary motivation throughout the story is to protect Eylstadt and its citizens from invasion by the neighboring empire of Germania. She is driven by a profound sense of responsibility that is both public and deeply personal. She does not possess any superhuman abilities, but her notable skills lie in her strategic thinking, political maneuvering, and personal bravery. Her courage is physical, as when she takes a shot at a pursuing fighter plane, and psychological, as she consistently makes difficult decisions for the long-term survival of her country.
Her most important relationship is with the series' titular witch, Izetta, whom she befriended in childhood after protecting the girl from a hostile mob, an act that left Finé with a lasting scar on her abdomen. This childhood encounter forged an unbreakable bond of loyalty and deep affection between them. Finé is initially hesitant to involve Izetta in the war, fearing it will put her friend in danger and expose her secret to a world that would not understand. However, she ultimately accepts Izetta's decision to fight, working to support her and formulating strategies that account for the limitations of the witch's magic. Their relationship, which is the emotional core of the story, is one of equals; Finé consistently treats Izetta with respect and seeks her counsel in critical moments.
Throughout the narrative, Finé's character undergoes significant development as she transitions from a proactive princess to a decisive ruler. Following the death of her father, she ascends to the throne and formally becomes the Archduchess of Eylstadt, shouldering the full weight of leadership. A key part of her development is recognizing the profound impact her own resolve has on those around her, particularly Izetta. She initially fails to grasp why Izetta would risk her life for her personally, rather than just for the sake of the country. This realization deepens her understanding of the bonds she has formed and fuels her determination to protect both her nation and the witch who fights for it.
