Description
Galan Mossa is a mercenary who appears in the second season of the anime. His presented name is a pseudonym, as his true identity was erased with the help of his long-time friend, Rustal Elion. Prior to his life as a mercenary, Galan was a former Gjallarhorn soldier and mobile suit pilot who retired from the organization a couple of years before the events of the story.
In terms of personality, Galan is depicted as a highly skilled tactician and a cunning individual. He is adept at reading the psychology of his associates and can easily feign concern to gain their trust. Privately, he holds a dismissive view of Tekkadan's members, referring to them as animals, though he also notes with detached observation that they could be tamed with food and reassurance.
Galan's primary motivation is his loyalty to Rustal Elion, a friendship that dates back to their time together at a military training school. To support his friend's ambitions, Galan voluntarily went underground, giving up his family and original affiliations to act as Rustal's covert associate, operating outside of normal channels.
His role in the story is that of an antagonist secretly hired by Rustal to destabilize the Earth-based economy bloc of Arbrau. Galan is tasked with fomenting a war between Arbrau and the SAU bloc to undermine the political credibility of McGillis Fareed. To achieve this, he orchestrates a bombing that takes key figures out of action and is subsequently placed in command of the defending forces, including Tekkadan's Earth Branch. Using his tactical acumen, he manipulates the conflict, dragging out the war and forcing Tekkadan into exhausting skirmishes that dull their senses and make them reliant on his strategies.
Key relationships define Galan's actions. His bond with Rustal Elion is the most significant, as his entire mercenary career is dedicated to serving Rustal's schemes. He also has a working relationship with Radice Riloto, who helps him manipulate the war effort, though this ultimately leads to his betrayal. His professional disdain for Tekkadan provides a clear contrast to the group's ethos.
Galan's development culminates in his final mission. After the arrival of reinforcements from Mars forces a stalemate, Galan attempts to retreat to the African Union but is betrayed by his ally. He is confronted and defeated in combat by an enraged Akihiro Altland. With his mobile suit's cockpit being crushed, Galan activates its self-destruct system, silently apologizing to Rustal as he perishes. His death successfully protects his benefactor, as all his business records were kept solely on his mobile suit's computer, leaving no evidence to incriminate Rustal.
Regarding notable abilities, Galan is an exceptionally skilled mobile suit pilot who prefers to pilot the older EB-04 Geirail, as its design suits his taste. His proficiency is demonstrated by the fact that he tested the newer EB-08 Reginlaze and achieved higher scores than the accomplished pilot Julieta Juris. Beyond his piloting skills, he is renowned as a cunning strategist with significant military achievements, able to prolong a war for weeks by tactically withdrawing forces whenever an advantage was gained.
