Description
Akihiro Altland is introduced as the leader of the Human Debris group within the Martian security company CGS. The term Human Debris refers to trafficked children who are conscripted into military service, a fate that befell Akihiro at a young age after his parents were killed in a pirate attack on their merchant ship, leading to his capture and sale. His early life is defined by this brutal reality, which instills in him a personality that is initially cold, withdrawn, and cliquish.

As a character, Akihiro is marked by his single-mindedness, resilience, and an intense focus on physical training, which he pursues obsessively, making him the strongest and most physically fit member of Tekkadan. He is blunt and unfriendly, preferring solitude and silent training over socializing. He demonstrates a somewhat friendly rivalry with Mikazuki Augus, another of Tekkadan's most gifted pilots, and is frequently seen competing with him in physical exercises. Despite his gruff exterior, he is dependable and often takes the lead during dangerous operations. As he is accepted by the members of Tekkadan not as a disposable tool but as a person, his perspective shifts, and he comes to view the organization as his family and his home, with other members looking up to him as a reliable older brother figure.

Akihiro's role in the story is that of a key combat leader and a high-ranking pilot for Tekkadan, eventually serving as the captain of its second operational squadron. His motivations are deeply rooted in his past as a Human Debris. He seeks to protect his newfound family and to find a place where he belongs. This is poignantly illustrated when he offers his own last name, Altland, to other former Human Debris within Tekkadan who have no family name, as a way to give them an identity and to thank them for caring for his long-lost younger brother, Masahiro. His resolve to protect those precious to him is so strong that he decides he must become less decent as a person to do so.

Several key relationships define his journey. His relationship with Mikazuki is built on mutual respect and a competitive edge, as both recognize the other's strength. His bond with Orga Itsuka, Tekkadan's leader, is one of loyalty, as Orga was the one who freed him and gave him a new purpose. The discovery of his younger brother, Masahiro, who had also become a Human Debris with another group, is a pivotal and tragic moment that directly influences Akihiro's decision to pilot the Gundam Gusion as a way to remember him. He also takes on a protective, brotherly role towards other younger members like Takaki Uno and later Aston and Derma, other former Human Debris he considers his adoptive brothers. His connection to Lafter Frankland of the Turbines hints at a potential romantic relationship, and her death is a catalyst for him to display profound anger and a thirst for vengeance.

Throughout the series, Akihiro undergoes significant development. He starts as a withdrawn individual who sees himself as nothing more than disposable trash, a piece of debris. His only concern is survival. However, through his experiences in Tekkadan, he learns to value his own life and the lives of his comrades. By the end of the story, he has grown enough to tell other young soldiers that they are no longer Human Debris who can die at will, urging them to survive and complete their mission. He resolves to live and fight to carry out his orders until the very end.

As a mobile suit pilot, Akihiro's abilities are second only to those of Mikazuki Augus. He has undergone the Alaya-Vijnana System surgery twice and survived, a risky procedure that directly interfaces a pilot's nervous system with their machine, enhancing its performance. Early on, his fighting style is described as extremely reckless and unrefined, but he shows a strong desire to improve, undergoing grueling training from skilled pilots like Azee and Lafter. This training refines his skills considerably. His physical fitness is unparalleled within Tekkadan, and while he is never seen fighting outside of his mobile suit, he possesses immense physical strength, capable of throwing a grown man with one hand. He pilots several notable units, starting with a Graze Custom and later inheriting and customizing the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion, transforming it first into the Gusion Rebake and later the Gusion Rebake Full City, which becomes his signature mobile suit.
