Description
Dayne Uhai is a minor supporting character introduced in the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, where he joins the private military company Tekkadan. He is also known by the alternate romanization of Dane Uhai.
He is a young man with brown hair cut to ear length and black eyes. Uhai comes across as an unusually quiet individual, to the point where his peers are often startled when he chooses to speak. Despite his reserved nature, he demonstrates wisdom and frequently acts as a calming voice of reason among the newer recruits of Tekkadan. He is portrayed as a good listener who is genuinely helpful to those around him.
Uhai's primary role within Tekkadan is that of a mechanic, working in the maintenance section alongside other technicians like Nadi Yukinojo Kassapa and Yamagi Gilmerton. He joins the organization at the same time as fellow reservists Hush Middy and Zack Lowe, and he is frequently seen in their company. While he rarely speaks, he often listens to their complaints and frustrations, offering them advice.
His motivations are not stated directly, but his actions suggest a desire for a stable place to belong. Unlike some of his comrades who are willing to throw their lives away for Tekkadan, Uhai holds a more pragmatic perspective. He understands why Zack Lowe is not willing to sacrifice himself in the same manner, even if he does not personally agree with that viewpoint, noting that he and many others in the crew have nowhere else to go. He also hints at a darker past, mentioning that he has killed people before, though the specific details or circumstances of this are never revealed.
Uhai has a noted relationship with his fellow reservist Hush Middy, for whom he provides support and looks out for during their training period. He further solidifies his role as a mechanic by servicing Hush's mobile suit during combat operations. He also maintains a friendship with Zack Lowe, and despite their differing perspectives on sacrifice and loyalty to Tekkadan, the two remain close.
His character develops from a quiet new recruit into a trusted member of the support staff. In the epilogue following the McGillis Fareed Incident and the dissolution of Tekkadan, Uhai does not remain a soldier. Instead, he pursues a civilian career, joining Zack Lowe to work at Lowe's father's company. Another source indicates he is also recruited to work alongside other former Tekkadan members at the Kassapa Factory, a business founded by the former chief mechanic Nadi Yukinojo Kassapa and his wife, Merribit Stapleton. His most notable ability is his skill as a mobile suit mechanic, maintaining and repairing the machines used by the young pilots of Tekkadan.
