Description
Naoto Azuma is the main protagonist of the anime series Tiger Mask W. He was originally a young junior wrestler in the small Japanese promotion Zipang Pro-Wrestling, where he trained alongside his close friend Takuma Fujii. Their lives were shattered when the massive western organization Global Wrestling Monopoly, or GWM, backed by the shadowy underground network known as Tiger's Den, crushed Zipang Pro-Wrestling, leaving the company's manager Daisuke Fujii severely injured. Driven by a desire for revenge and to restore honor, Naoto swore to bring down Tiger's Den. He sought out Kentaro Takaoka, a former ally of the original Tiger Mask, Naoto Date, and began rigorous training at Date's facility on Mount Fuji. Three years later, Naoto emerged as a new incarnation of Tiger Mask, adopting the iconic tiger-striped mask and entering New Japan Pro-Wrestling to publicly fight the GWM.

Naoto is characterized by a strong sense of justice, determination, and resilience. He is earnest and hardworking, often pushing himself to his physical limits in pursuit of his goals. His motivation is not purely revenge; he also carries the legacy of the original Tiger Mask, who used his fame to help orphaned children. Naoto is driven to protect professional wrestling from corruption and to honor the memory of those who suffered under Tiger's Den. His core motivation is to defeat the true mastermind behind the GWM, eventually revealed as the wrestler known as The Third, who is the real Yellow Devil.

Throughout the story, Naoto serves as the heroic face of the resistance against the GWM. He competes in NJPW, earning the respect of real-world wrestlers and gradually building alliances. His key relationships include his childhood friend Takuma Fujii, who becomes his rival under the mask of Tiger the Dark after joining Tiger's Den to avenge his father. Naoto and Takuma remain unaware of each other's identities for much of the series, which fuels their intense in-ring confrontations. Another important relationship is with Haruna Takaoka, the daughter of his trainer Kentaro. She becomes Naoto's secret agent and manager, supporting him behind the scenes, and the two develop mutual romantic feelings that are acknowledged by the story's end. Kentaro Takaoka acts as a mentor figure, teaching Naoto the fundamentals and the deeper philosophy of the Tiger Mask legacy.

The character undergoes significant development. Early on, Naoto is eager but raw, relying on sheer determination. He learns to develop his signature finishing move, the Tiger Drive, with guidance from veteran wrestlers. The brutality of the wrestling world forces him to confront moral dilemmas, especially when he is coerced into betraying NJPW to earn a title shot against The Third. This period of being forced to act as a villain tests his integrity, but he ultimately stays true to his heroic nature. His relationship with Takuma deepens through tragedy; after Takuma is severely injured and unmasked, Naoto reveals his own identity, leading to a reconciliation. In the final arc, Naoto defeats The Third in a decisive sudden-death match, shattering the Tiger's Den. After the victory, he and Takuma set out together to wrestle overseas under a shared ring name, Tiger Mask W, signifying the bond they have rebuilt and their joint commitment to the future of professional wrestling.

In terms of abilities, Naoto is a highly skilled junior heavyweight wrestler, known for his speed, agility, and aerial moves. His signature technique, the Tiger Drive, is a high-impact finisher that he perfects over the course of the series. He also demonstrates strong ring intelligence, the capacity to learn from both allies and opponents, and enough toughness to withstand severe punishment. As Tiger Mask, he embodies the iconic traits of the character: a mix of technical wrestling, high-flying offense, and the symbolic power of the mask that represents justice and protection.
