Description
Dolugh, also known as Drew, is a central character in the anime ēlDLIVE, serving as the symbiotic partner and closest companion to the protagonist, Chuuta Kokonose. Dolugh is a member of the Monitalien species, a type of extraterrestrial lifeform specifically created for the purpose of surveillance and observation of other planets. Its full designation is Fourth Generation Symbiotic Lifeform, Water Planet Compatible Rain Brick Type 390. Having been dispatched to Earth over four billion years ago, Dolugh had been living inside Chuuta’s body since the boy was young, manifesting initially as a mysterious voice that only Chuuta could hear.
In terms of physical appearance, Dolugh is a small, white, and distinctly cute creature whose form is visible to everyone around it. Despite its visible form, its voice remains a telepathic bond shared exclusively with Chuuta. A notable feature is the red gem on its forehead, which is identified as one of the lost glyphs of the planet Glyph, where it was created. Dolugh’s appearance is not static; after surviving a near-fatal crisis, it underwent a significant transformation, gaining wings which symbolize a powerful evolution of its abilities.
Dolugh possesses a personality that stands in stark contrast to the timid and insecure Chuuta. It is intensely curious and inquisitive, a trait it justifies by explaining that its species was designed to gather information. This curiosity is paired with a bold, confident, and sometimes slightly arrogant manner of speaking. It often adopts a superior tone when observing the world around it and does not hesitate to voice its opinions or tease Chuuta. Despite its boastful tendencies, Dolugh is surprisingly insightful and capable of reading Chuuta’s emotional state with great accuracy, acting as a sort of conscience that questions his decisions and helps him strategize during missions. Their dynamic is a primary source of both comedic banter and heartfelt support within the story.
The core of Dolugh’s motivation and role is inextricably linked to its bond with Chuuta. As a symbiote, Dolugh is attached to Chuuta until the host’s death, and their fates are completely intertwined. Dolugh effectively functions as Chuuta’s SPH organ, the source of the space pheromones that allow him to fight as an officer of the space police, élDLIVE. Their combat technique, known as Sympathy, relies on Chuuta visualizing a specific attack while Dolugh provides the power to manifest it into reality. This connection is so deep that it transcends mere partnership; they share physical sensations and emotional states. If Chuuta loses confidence or becomes mentally unstable, Dolugh’s physical form will grow faint and indistinct. Conversely, when Chuuta is hurt, Dolugh feels the same pain.
Dolugh’s key relationship is exclusively with Chuuta, as it exists in a state of total symbiosis with him. Theirs is a relationship of mutual dependency and growth. Dolugh acts as a guide, pushing Chuuta to overcome his insecurities and become a more effective officer, while its own health and power are directly sustained by Chuuta’s mental fortitude. This bond undergoes a severe test during the events of the third season. When Dolugh is critically injured and near death, Chuuta also begins to die as a result of their shared link. In a desperate survival response, Dolugh initiates an explosive evolution, or update, to find a new host. However, Chuuta’s unwavering trust and determination allow them to re-establish their symbiosis. This event not only heals them both but results in Dolugh’s evolution, granting it wings and unlocking new levels of speed and power that are also transferred to Chuuta.
Dolugh’s notable abilities center on its symbiotic nature and its evolution. Its primary function is to generate SPH energy for Chuuta, enabling him to perform superhuman feats and engage alien criminals. Its most prominent combat skill is the Sympathy attack, a collaborative technique that brings Chuuta’s imagination to life as a destructive force. The most significant demonstration of its development is the update it undergoes, which not only alters its physical form but also enhances Chuuta’s capabilities, granting him the same wings and drastically increased speed. This evolution proves that the strength of their bond directly influences their power, making trust and mutual belief their greatest weapons.
