TV-Series
Description
Nagamasa Makihara is a professor at an unnamed university who devotes himself to studying the phenomenon of Hand Shakers and the alternate dimension known as Ziggurat. He is an adult man of thirty‑one years, with brown hair and brown eyes, standing one hundred eighty‑five centimeters tall, and is usually seen wearing glasses and a suit. His personality is generally upbeat and energetic, often reacting with visible enthusiasm when his research yields new results.

Prior to the main events of the story, Makihara placed Koyori Akutagawa in a medically induced sleep. He did this to preserve her life force until a compatible partner could be found, aware that as a potential Hand Shaker she would otherwise gradually weaken. When Tazuna Takatsuki arrives at the university in response to a repair request, Makihara orchestrates the meeting that leads to the two becoming a pair of Hand Shakers. After their bond is formed, Makihara explains the basic rules of being a Hand Shaker—that they must hold hands to keep Koyori alive and that they are now bound to fight other pairs in Ziggurat for the chance to face God and make a wish. He also arranges for Koyori to stay at Tazuna’s home, inventing a cover story about her being an exchange student.

Makihara serves as an early source of exposition and logistical support for the main protagonists. He continues to monitor Koyori’s health and offers advice when needed, though he does not directly participate in combat. Later in the story, it is revealed that Makihara himself was once a Hand Shaker but lost the partner he was supposed to hold hands with. This personal loss informs his determination to protect Koyori and to understand the nature of the Hand Shaker bond. Beyond his role as a researcher and caretaker, Makihara’s past also connects him to the larger mystery surrounding the origins of the Akutagawa twins and the events that set the series’ conflict in motion. He does not wield a Nimrod in the present timeline, instead relying on his scientific expertise and his network of contacts to assist Tazuna and Koyori in their journey.
