Description
Kuzuya is the nameless protagonist and narrator of planetarian, known simply as the junker or, in the original Japanese, Kuzuya, a term that means scrap dealer. He was born in 2051 inside a Japanese dome city and survives in a world devastated by biological and nuclear warfare, where toxic rain falls constantly and automated war machines hunt anyone who enters their territory. To stay alive, he scavenges ruined cities for usable goods, food, and equipment, a profession that shapes his entire existence. He carries a grenade launcher for self-defense and wears a waterproof coat to shield his skin from the corrosive rain; his canteen is fitted with a purifier so he can drink filtered rainwater.

His personality is a direct product of this harsh environment. Kuzuya is tough, pragmatic, and emotionally guarded. He approaches every situation with cold logic, evaluating risks and rewards solely in terms of survival. He rarely allows himself to express sentiment or attachment because such feelings are a liability in a world where trust can be fatal. Conversation with him is often blunt, self-centered, and dismissive, especially early on. Beneath this hardened exterior, however, there is a lingering curiosity and an unspoken longing for something beyond mere subsistence, though he would never admit it openly.

Kuzuya enters the story when he sneaks into a derelict metropolis known as the sarcophagus city, searching for valuables. He finds a building with a dome on its roof that he first mistakes for a military facility. Inside, he discovers an abandoned planetarium and meets Hoshino Yumemi, a companion robot who has waited for customers for thirty years. She mistakes him for the 2,500,000th visitor and insists on giving him a projection of the starry sky. Although he is irritated and initially tries to leave, he ends up agreeing to help repair the broken planetarium projector, Miss Jena.

His role in the narrative begins as a reluctant participant and gradually transforms into that of a protector and a witness. After repairing the projector, he experiences the artificial stars, something he has never seen because the real sky is permanently hidden by thick clouds. The power cuts out during the show, but at his request Yumemi continues her narration without visuals. When the planetarium loses electricity for the year, Kuzuya decides to take Yumemi out of the city, intending to bring her with him. As they travel, he becomes increasingly protective of her, even though he knows she is a machine. In the end, his efforts to save her are thwarted, and she is destroyed by a war machine after her battery runs out.

The central relationship in Kuzuyas arc is with Yumemi. At first, he sees her only as a broken robot, a source of annoyance and potential spare parts. Over time, her unwavering hospitality, innocence, and dedication to her duty begin to chip away at his cynicism. He finds himself valuing her existence, not for any practical reason, but because she represents a fragment of beauty and hope from the old world. After her destruction, he is left with a profound sense of loss that redefines his purpose. In the later timeline depicted in Planetarian: Storyteller of the Stars, an elderly Kuzuya travels from settlement to settlement with a portable planetarium projector, showing people the stars and telling Yumemis story. He has become the Hoshi no Hito, the man of the stars, carrying forward the dream that Yumemi could never fulfill herself. This transformation from a self-centered scavenger to a storyteller who brings comfort to others is the core of his development.

Kuzuyas notable abilities are grounded in survival. He is an expert scavenger, able to identify useful items in ruins, navigate hazardous environments, and avoid or confront war machines. He possesses practical mechanical and electrical repair skills, shown most clearly when he diagnoses and fixes the broken planetarium projector. His knowledge of pre-war technology and his methodical, analytical mind allow him to solve problems under pressure. In combat, he is capable of using a grenade launcher effectively, though he relies more on stealth and caution. His endurance and adaptability are significant, as he has spent his entire life moving through the remains of civilization, yet his most important quality is not a skill but a gradual reawakening of empathy and the ability to find meaning in preserving a small, fragile light for others.
