Description
Ikuya Ogura is an American biophysicist of Japanese origin, having moved to the United States in or around 1999 to pursue advanced research on demi-humans, known as Ajin. His scientific work in America, where he studied top-tier cases and developed theories about the nature of Ajin and their IBM, or Invisible Black Matter, was regarded as unorthodox and absurd by the Japanese scientific community.

Physically, Ogura appears to be a man in his late forties to early fifties, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is frequently depicted slouching and smoking cigarettes. His defining characteristic is his remarkably careless and unflappable personality. He approaches even the most dire situations with a dark sense of humor and a surprising degree of detachment. This attitude is most notably displayed when he is captured and interrogated by Yu Tosaki. Facing torture, Ogura did not react with fear but instead bargained to keep three of his fingers intact, claiming he needed them to flick the ash from his cigarettes. He ultimately lost two fingers during this interrogation. His dismissive response to physical pain stems from a personal philosophy that physical suffering is trivial compared to emotional or psychological pain, suggesting a history of profound trauma that this flippant attitude serves to mask.

Despite his lackadaisical demeanor, Ogura is exceptionally knowledgeable about the scientific underpinnings of the Ajin phenomenon. He provides crucial insights into how Black Ghosts are formed and how they operate, including the effects when multiple IBMs collide. In the narrative of Ajin: Demi-Human - Collide, his primary role is that of an information source after being forcibly brought to Japan. Following an attack by the antagonist Sato, Tosaki seizes the opportunity to capture Ogura, hoping to extract the secrets of the Black Ghosts that the American biophysicist is known to possess.

His key relationships are defined by this capture. His interaction with Yu Tosaki is strictly transactional; Tosaki views him purely as a valuable asset, while Ogura remains unnervingly indifferent to the authority and violence wielded by his captor. He is accompanied by David Anderson, who acts as his bodyguard. Ogura also forms a connection with the protagonist, Kei Nagai, understanding him on a scientific level and explaining the mechanics of his abilities, including the behavior of his IBM. Ogura serves as a narrative tool for exposition, yet his unique and provocative calmness provides moments of dark levity within the tense and often gruesome storyline.
