Description
Kei Nagai is the protagonist of the story, a young high school student whose life is irrevocably altered when he discovers he is an Ajin, an immortal being who can regenerate from any wound. Before this revelation, Kei was a brilliant student with a promising future in medicine, having achieved a perfect score on a mock medical exam. He was raised by a mother who instilled in him the need to be an upstanding member of society and to associate only with people who would be beneficial to his success, which he internalized to the point of having superficial friendships.

Kei’s core personality is defined by a cold, logical, and deeply pragmatic outlook. He lacks genuine empathy or sympathy for most people, a trait he admits to when he questions why a sympathetic surgeon feels concern for others, realizing that his own caring has only ever been a pretense. He views relationships and social interactions through a cost-benefit analysis, often doing what is expected to be accepted by society rather than out of any moral desire. This selfish and calculating nature leads his sister to label him a jerk, and he acknowledges that he has always lived by taking only what he needs to succeed. Despite this, he is not entirely devoid of a moral code; he sincerely apologizes to those he has wronged, helps an old lady who fell off her bike with no benefit to himself, and is shown to have a complicated form of concern for his friend Kaito and his sister Eriko, even if he struggles to express it in conventional ways.

Following his discovery as an Ajin after a fatal truck accident, Kei’s primary motivation shifts from academic success to pure self-preservation. He is thrown into a world where the government seeks to capture and experiment on Ajin, forcing him to flee. His role in the story evolves as he initially tries to simply hide and survive. However, he eventually comes into conflict with Sato, a powerful and murderous Ajin terrorist, which forces Kei to take a stand. Recognizing that he cannot live in hiding forever, he formulates a plan to stop Sato, joining forces with his former pursuer, the government agent Tosaki, primarily for his own safety and to ensure his freedom rather than to be a hero.

His key relationships are complex and often utilitarian. His childhood friend Kaito is one of the few people he shows genuine loyalty to, and Kaito’s unwavering support provides Kei with one of his strongest emotional anchors. His relationship with his sister Eriko is strained, as she sees through his antisocial facade, yet his desire to cure her illness was his original motivation for studying medicine. He forms a critical alliance with Yuu Tosaki, a government agent he initially fled from, as they share a ruthless, calculating nature and a mutual need to stop Sato. His foil and primary antagonist is Sato, whose ideals of Ajin supremacy and wanton violence directly oppose Kei’s desire for a quiet, peaceful life.

Throughout the story, Kei undergoes significant development, though it is more of an unmasking than a traditional heroic transformation. He starts as a seemingly kind and decent person but quickly sheds this pretense when his life goes to hell, revealing the deeply pragmatic and antisocial individual underneath. As the series progresses, he becomes more ruthless and willing to do whatever is necessary for survival, but he also gains a stronger sense of agency, moving from a passive victim to an active player who strategizes against powerful enemies.

As an Ajin, Kei possesses several notable abilities. He is immortal, meaning any lethal wound will cause his body to regenerate to full health after a short period. He can emit a powerful scream that temporarily paralyzes anyone nearby. His primary combat asset is his Black Ghost (or IBM), a terrifying, invisible creature he can manifest. Uniquely among Ajin, Kei can summon his Black Ghost multiple times a day and has an exceptionally high density of the matter used to create it, making his ghost much larger and more powerful than average. However, he initially has poor control over it, and it often acts of its own will, even attacking him. In moments of extreme emotional stress, he can trigger the rare "flood" phenomenon, where he releases multiple Black Ghosts simultaneously. His most effective weapon, however, is his mind; his intelligence, tactical prowess, and eerily logical mindset are what truly allow him to outmaneuver his enemies.
