Description
Kei Nagai is the protagonist of the story, a young high school student whose life is irrevocably altered when he discovers he is an Ajin, an immortal being who can regenerate from any wound. Before this revelation, Kei was a brilliant student with a promising future in medicine, having achieved a perfect score on a mock medical exam. He was raised by a mother who instilled in him the need to be an upstanding member of society and to associate only with people who would be beneficial to his success, which he internalized to the point of having superficial friendships.
Kei’s core personality is defined by a cold, logical, and deeply pragmatic outlook. He lacks genuine empathy or sympathy for most people, a trait he admits to when he questions why a sympathetic surgeon feels concern for others, realizing that his own caring has only ever been a pretense. He views relationships and social interactions through a cost-benefit analysis, often doing what is expected to be accepted by society rather than out of any moral desire. This selfish and calculating nature leads his sister to label him a jerk, and he acknowledges that he has always lived by taking only what he needs to succeed. Following his discovery as an Ajin after a fatal truck accident, Kei’s primary motivation shifts from academic success to pure self-preservation. However, he eventually comes into conflict with Sato, a powerful and murderous Ajin terrorist, which forces Kei to take a stand. Recognizing that he cannot live in hiding forever, he formulates a plan to stop Sato, joining forces with his former pursuer, the government agent Tosaki, primarily for his own safety and to ensure his freedom rather than to be a hero.
