Description
Nemuri Kayama, known professionally as the R-Rated Hero Midnight, was a Pro Hero and a faculty member at U.A. High School, where she taught Modern Hero Art History. Born on March 9 and standing 175 centimeters tall, she served as the Chief Referee for the first-year Sports Festival. Her hero identity, classified as adult-oriented, was a deliberate expression of her confidence and individuality.

Kayama’s background was explored in the prequel series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, where she appeared as a third-year U.A. student. During that time, she interned under the hero Purple Highness and formed lasting bonds with classmates Shota Aizawa, Hizashi Yamada, and Oboro Shirakumo. She was responsible for giving Aizawa his hero name, Eraser Head, and later encouraged him to take up a teaching position at U.A. Her compassionate nature was evident when she offered to care for a stray kitten that Aizawa had found, demonstrating her sense of responsibility. The untimely death of Shirakumo deeply affected her but did not weaken her resolve.

In personality, Kayama was flirtatious, playful, and confident, often embracing her femininity and using her appearance as a source of strength. She enjoyed being in the spotlight and had a theatrical flair, yet she was also intelligent, perceptive, and articulate. Beneath her flamboyant exterior was a caring and protective individual. She had a known habit of taunting barely conscious opponents, which sometimes backfired, but this sadistic streak was never cruel—it was an indulgence rather than malice. Her teaching style was unorthodox; she fostered open discussions about heroism and played a key role in helping Class 1‑A select their hero names, ensuring they were appropriate and meaningful.

Her core motivation was to help others and nurture the next generation of heroes. She believed in her students’ potential and encouraged them to trust their instincts and overcome their fears. This altruism was not driven by a desire for fame or glory but by a genuine wish to see others succeed and be happy.

As a Pro Hero, Kayama participated in various school events and training exercises. She acted as a referee during the Sports Festival, presented All Might when he awarded medals, and took part in a training match against students Mineta and Sero, where she used her Quirk to quickly incapacitate Sero. She also appeared in a special training scenario as a shop employee, helping students practice rescue and combat in a simulated environment. During the Paranormal Liberation War, she fought on the front lines alongside other heroes, demonstrating true heroism by endangering herself to protect her colleagues and students.

Key relationships included her close friendship with Shota Aizawa, which evolved from playful teasing to mutual respect. She teamed up with Hizashi Yamada as work study partners, their abilities complementing each other. She also mentored Oboro Shirakumo, treating him like a younger brother and encouraging him to be more assertive. While she admired the legacy of Nana Shimura, her direct connections were primarily with her U.A. peers and her own students.

Kayama’s Quirk was Somnambulist, which allowed her to release a sleep-inducing fragrance from her body. The aroma affected the central nervous system of those who inhaled it, putting them into a deep sleep, and was more effective on individuals attracted to her. To control the spread of the scent, she used tools such as a whip called the “Love Whip” and a feather fan that could direct the fragrance toward specific targets. Her hero costume, made of ultra-thin fabric, allowed the scent to pass through, enabling her to use her Quirk effectively. In combat, she combined strategic intelligence with precise control of her aroma, capable of neutralizing multiple opponents without lethal force. She also possessed considerable hand-to-hand combat skills and tactical acumen.

Her development throughout the series showed a transition from a flashy, attention-seeking hero to a dedicated teacher and protector. She overcame her own desire for recognition to focus on the safety and growth of her students. In the end, Kayama lost her life during the Paranormal Liberation War, making the ultimate sacrifice while trying to hold off enemies and protect those under her care. Her death served as a stark reminder of the real dangers heroes face and the selflessness required in their line of work. She is remembered as a hero who valued compassion, authenticity, and the welfare of others above all else.
