Description
Nemuri Kayama, known by her hero name Midnight and the title R-Rated Hero, is a Pro Hero and a faculty member at U.A. High School, where she teaches Modern Hero Art History. She stands 175 centimeters tall and was born on March 9. Her real name, Nemuri, translates to "sleep" and her surname Kayama to "fragrance," both of which reflect the nature of her Quirk.
Midnight's Quirk, Somnambulist, allows her to emit a sleep-inducing aroma from her skin. When inhaled, this fragrance rapidly sends targets into a deep unconsciousness. The effect is described as being more potent on males than on females, though it works on both. To maximize the release of her Quirk, Midnight wears a costume made of an ultra-thin, tear-away fabric that can be quickly removed to expose more skin. Her earlier, more revealing costume inadvertently led to the establishment of hero costume regulations. She complements her Quirk with specialized equipment, including whip-like weapons called "whips of love" to direct the aroma and a feather fan to spread it over a wider area. Despite its effectiveness, Somnambulist can be countered by holding one's breath, escaping its range, or wearing a gas mask.
In terms of personality, Midnight is playful, flirtatious, and theatrical, often adopting a dominant, almost sadistic persona during battles and teaching. However, she also possesses a serious and temperamental side, becoming irritated when interrupted or insulted, particularly about her age. Beneath her flamboyant exterior lies a deeply compassionate and selfless individual. She did not become a hero for fame or money; rather, she follows her heart and her passion for helping others. She is unafraid to challenge stereotypes and embraces her femininity as a source of strength. As a teacher, she uses unorthodox methods to encourage open and honest discussions about heroism, and she cares deeply about her students' growth. She oversaw the hero-name selection process for Class 1-A and served as the chief referee of the U.A. Sports Festival.
Midnight's motivations stem from a genuine desire to protect others and set a positive example. She is happiest when everyone around her is safe and happy. Her compassion is evident in her willingness to take in a stray kitten for a friend and her relentless dedication to her students even in life-threatening situations. Her key relationships include a long-standing friendship with Shota Aizawa (Eraserhead) and Hizashi Yamada (Present Mic), dating back to her own school days as depicted in the spinoff series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. She personally urged Aizawa to become a teacher at U.A. She also interned with the hero His Purple Highness during her youth.
Midnight's development is shown through her evolution from a flashy student hero in Vigilantes to a responsible teacher and mentor. Her role in the main story is that of a supportive faculty member and combatant. During the Paranormal Liberation War, she was tasked with subduing the giant villain Gigantomachia. After being attacked by Mr. Compress and separated from her allies, she was mortally wounded by an unknown villain. Despite her injuries, she issued final instructions to her students, telling them to trust their judgment. Her death was confirmed off-screen and had a profound impact on the students, serving as a stark reminder of the real dangers of hero work. She stands as a character defined not by raw power, but by her unwavering compassion, strategic mind, and willingness to sacrifice herself for the sake of others.
