Description
Endeavour, whose real name is Enji Todoroki, is a major character in My Hero Academia known for being the former Number Two and later the Number One professional hero. He is a tall, powerfully built man with sharp blue eyes, red hair, and a muscular physique, often seen wearing his flame-resistant hero costume that covers his torso and arms. A distinctive feature is the large burn scar covering the left side of his face, an injury sustained during a battle with a powerful Nomu. He has the ability to generate and manipulate intense flames from any part of his body, a Quirk known as Hellflame. This power is incredibly strong, allowing him to unleash devastating attacks such as Flashfire Fist and his ultimate move, Prominence Burn, a concentrated beam of fire. He can also use his flames to achieve a form of limited flight for enhanced mobility. However, this power has a significant drawback; overusing his flames causes his body temperature to rise to dangerous levels, leading to overheating and impairing his physical functions if a battle is prolonged.

Endeavour's driving motivation has historically been an all-consuming desire to surpass All Might, the former Symbol of Peace who held the Number One rank. Despite being a highly effective hero who solved more cases than any other in history and founded his own successful agency, Endeavour could not overcome the overwhelming gap in power and public adoration between himself and All Might. This festering inferiority complex and envy led him down a dark path, as he became obsessed with creating a successor who could achieve what he could not. To this end, he arranged a "Quirk marriage," marrying Rei Himura for her ice-based Quirk in the hopes of producing a child with both fire and ice powers, which would not suffer from the overheating weakness of his own flames. After several children who did not meet his exacting standards, his youngest son, Shoto Todoroki, was born with the perfect balance of powers he sought.

As a father, Endeavour was abusive and neglectful. He subjected Shoto to brutal, Spartan training from the age of five, isolating him from his siblings and treating him not as a son, but as a "masterpiece" or tool designed to surpass All Might. This treatment, along with the intense pressure, eventually caused his wife Rei to suffer a mental breakdown, during which she threw boiling water on Shoto's face, giving him his scar. Endeavour had her institutionalized and continued his single-minded pursuit of his goal. His other children, Toya, Fuyumi, and Natsuo, were largely neglected. His eldest son, Toya, who possessed a powerful fire Quirk but lacked the constitution to withstand it, was abandoned in his training. Toya's subsequent disappearance in a fire would later haunt Endeavour and prove to be the origin of a major villain, Dabi.

Endeavour's role in the story changes dramatically following the forced retirement of All Might. He ascends to the Number One rank, but instead of feeling triumphant, he is hollow and burdened, realizing that winning the position by default feels meaningless. He begins a difficult and introspective journey to atone for his past sins and become a hero worthy of the title, not just in power but in character. He seeks advice from All Might on what it means to be a Symbol of Peace and starts the painstaking process of trying to reconnect with his estranged family, though his children, particularly Natsuo and Shoto, are rightfully hesitant and resentful. He works to mentor young heroes, including his son Shoto, teaching him techniques and showing a genuine, if clumsy, desire to be a better father. His key relationships are central to his character development, most notably his strained marriage to Rei, his tragic connection to his presumed-dead son Toya, his cold interactions with Natsuo, his hopeful but fragile bond with Shoto, and his professional partnership with the cunning Number Two hero, Hawks. His growth from a figure of pure antagonism to a deeply flawed man attempting, with great difficulty, to make amends and build a new legacy of heroism is one of the most complex and acclaimed character arcs in the series.
