Description
J. J. Sexton is a character from the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky. He serves as a scientist and engineer for the Principality of Zeon forces during the One Year War, specifically assigned to the Living Dead Division. His primary function within this unit is as the project lead for the development of the Reuse P Device, a revolutionary but experimental control system intended to allow a pilot to operate a mobile suit's limbs and weapon systems directly through thought, bypassing traditional physical controls.

As an individual, Sexton is characterized by a powerful drive to advance his research, an ambition that overwhelmingly dictates his actions and morals. He is a fundamentally selfish and cowardly figure, viewing the wounded and desperate pilots of the Living Dead Division not as comrades but as convenient test subjects, or lab rats, for his experimental technology. This lack of empathy is a core aspect of his personality, revealing a man who is willing to sacrifice the humanity and well-being of others for the sake of his project's success.

His motivations are rooted in a blend of scientific ambition and personal survival. Sexton is desperate to complete the Reuse P Device, and he seizes upon the misfortune of others to achieve this goal. This is most clearly demonstrated when he persuades the ace Zeon pilot Daryl Lorenz to voluntarily amputate his remaining organic limbs, arguing that replacing them with prosthetic connections would allow for a deeper, more effective synchronization with the Reuse P Device-equipped Zaku II. Sexton’s drive for self-preservation ultimately overrides any sense of duty, cementing his role as a figure who will exploit any situation for his own benefit.

In the story’s climax, as the Zeon flagship Dried Fish comes under heavy attack and begins to be destroyed, Sexton’s true nature is fully revealed. Amidst the chaos, he physically pushes aside a wounded soldier to selfishly commandeer an escape pod for himself, fleeing the battlefield and abandoning his post and the personnel under his command. This act of cowardice defines his role in the narrative’s resolution.

Despite being presumed dead after the battle, Sexton’s story continues beyond the immediate events of December Sky. His prior defection to the South Seas Alliance is eventually revealed, where he resurfaces as one of their chief scientists. In this new capacity, he continues his work on the Reuse P Device, producing a new model of Zaku II for his new masters. This arc demonstrates a pattern of survival and opportunism, as he aligns himself with whichever faction allows him to continue his research unhindered.

In terms of abilities, J. J. Sexton possesses no notable piloting or combat skills. His expertise lies entirely in the fields of engineering and scientific research. His primary notable ability is his technical knowledge as the architect of the Reuse P Device, a complex neuroscientific and robotics project. This makes him a valuable asset to any military force seeking to gain a technological edge, even as his personal conduct remains morally reprehensible.
