Description
Kiruka Ushirode is a third-year student and the captain of the Suzumegahara Middle School table tennis club. She is easily recognized by her black hair, typically styled in a long ponytail that reaches her hips, and her distinctive narrow, almost always closed eyes. Her casual and somewhat untidy manner of dress, often leaving one shoulder exposed, is another notable aspect of her appearance. Her birthday is April 1st.

As the club captain, Kiruka is portrayed as a highly skilled and strategic player, possessing an impenetrable defensive style that makes her a formidable opponent. Her greatest ambition, which she has held since her first year of middle school, is to lead her team to the national tournament. This long-held dream is a central driving force behind her actions and leadership. She is known for her pragmatic, sometimes sarcastic, personality and has a tendency to come across as a super-sadist, particularly through unorthodox methods like using cosplay as punishment for team selection tests. Despite this strict and testing exterior, she has a fondness for cute things, such as cat ears.

Kiruka’s role in the story is that of the team's anchor and evaluator. She is the strongest player, and her primary function is to gauge the potential of other members. She personally tests each player, with only Agari Kamiya and the protagonist, Koyori Tsumujikaze, managing to pass her rigorous challenge and earn a place on the tournament team. Her actions are all ultimately in service of building a team capable of reaching nationals, a goal that gradually inspires the other members as well.

A key relationship in her life is with Munemune Omune, who is described as her best friend. The narrative also shows that Kiruka has been waiting for teammates who can play at her level, and she actively seeks to bring out the best in Agari and Koyori. Her development is subtly shown through flashbacks, which reveal she was not always the "closed eyes" character archetype; in her first year, her eyes were open and she appeared more normal and straightforward. This change in design mirrors her development into a more reserved and calculative leader.

Notably, she suffered a leg injury at some point, which kept her from playing table tennis for a period of time. On the table, her abilities are exceptional. She is a defensive specialist, but the series notes that she is insanely good and possesses an impenetrable defense. She is also skilled in cut techniques, which are a general term for shots that apply downward rotation to the ball. Her experience and talent are such that she won a previous era meeting in elementary school, establishing her pedigree as a player from a young age.
