Description
Mamiko Ōmae is the older sister of Kumiko Ōmae, being five years her senior and a third-year university student during the second season of Sound! Euphonium. She has brown hair and brown eyes, stands 165 cm tall, and was born on January 25. While living away from home to attend university, she frequently returns to the family house. In her youth, Mamiko was an experienced trombone player, and it was her involvement with brass instruments that sparked Kumiko’s initial interest in playing music. Despite being a former musician, Mamiko quit playing in high school, a decision that later becomes a source of regret and tension within the family.

Her personality is typically serious and studious; she is described as a straight-A student who generally follows her parents’ rules. However, she can come across as blunt, cold, and even slightly arrogant toward people she perceives as beneath her. This dichotomy is most evident in her interactions with her younger sister, whom she sometimes nags or criticizes for practicing euphonium at home when she is not aiming for a music school. Despite these moments of harshness, Mamiko’s underlying care for Kumiko becomes clearer over time.

Mamiko’s motivations in the second season revolve around her desire to pursue her own path, specifically enrolling in beauty school, which puts her in direct conflict with her parents’ expectations. This quarrel reaches a peak in episode eight, when she argues with her parents and ultimately decides to become financially independent to follow her dream. This struggle highlights her determination and willingness to stand up for her own choices, even at the cost of familial friction.

Her role in the story is primarily that of a foil to both Kumiko and the senior euphonium player Asuka Tanaka. While Asuka faces pressure from her mother to abandon music for academics, Mamiko represents the opposite trajectory: someone who gave up music and later regrets it. Mamiko’s journey toward independence and her encouragement of Kumiko to keep playing serve as catalysts for Kumiko’s own growth. She is openly supportive of Kumiko being able to continue band practice, something she herself could not do, and this vocal support helps Kumiko appreciate the value of her time in the concert band.

Mamiko’s key relationship is with her sister Kumiko. Their bond is initially fraught with bickering and misunderstanding, but it deepens as the season progresses. Mamiko’s decision to fight for her own ambitions and her eventual reconciliation with Kumiko demonstrate her maturation. She also has a strained relationship with her parents, but she navigates it by asserting her independence.

Notable abilities include her past proficiency on the trombone, which she played from a young age. This early musical experience made her the original influence for Kumiko’s choice of instrument. Her growth is most apparent in the second season, where she transforms from a seemingly rigid, rule-abiding older sister into someone who actively pursues her own dreams and openly champions Kumiko’s musical path. By the end of the season, Mamiko has found the courage to speak her mind to her parents and has reconciled with her sister, leaving a lasting impression as a character who symbolizes the cost of giving up a passion and the strength required to reclaim it.
