Description
Aryabhata, often called Arya, is a character from the anime Taboo Tattoo who serves as the primary antagonist. She is the princess of the Kingdom of Selinistan, a position she did not inherit peacefully but seized through a coup d'état that resulted in the death of the king and queen, who were her adoptive parents and had favored a more moderate diplomatic approach. Her true origin is far more complex and tragic, as she was not born through natural means. She is a clone, a living interface created as the successful result of ruthless and cruel human experiments ordered by the former king. These experiments were conducted on a tribe that was descended from the ancient creators of the Power Crests, as the king sought a way to control the powerful technology found in ruins within his nation. Thousands of tribe members were studied and killed in the process, with Aryabhata being the perfect specimen. Although the king eventually came to regret his actions and adopted her as his own daughter, the revelation of her origins and the horrific fate of her people fueled an absolute hatred for humanity within her.
Driven by this resentment, Aryabhata is a nationalist with the ultimate goal of world domination. She believes that humanity has achieved nothing except war and death, and that there is no redemption for them. Her personal motivation is to reshape the world according to her own will, creating a new reality free from the violent and aggressive nature she despises in mankind. She is characterized by a dignified and beautiful demeanor, but this composure belies a broken and deeply angry individual. Her personality includes a notable and unequaled love for games, which is a reflection of her view of her own grand plans as a kind of strategic play.
In the story, Aryabhata commands the full military and political power of the Kingdom of Selinistan. She leads an elite group of Power Crest users known as the Brahmin, who are fiercely loyal to her. Her key relationships are largely defined by her power and tragic past. Her adoptive father, the king, is the object of her ultimate betrayal, as she kills him for his crimes against her people. Her "clone sisters," such as Kujuli, are other survivors of the experiments who live in a secret underground facility; unlike Arya, they do not share her hatred for humanity. Her primary opposition comes from Seigi Akatsuka, the protagonist, whose strong sense of justice clashes directly with her plans for global conquest. As the main villain and final boss of the series, her actions set the central conflict in motion as she seeks to claim all Power Crests for herself.
Aryabhata possesses a unique and extraordinarily powerful ability. Her Power Crest is triggerless, meaning she does not need a specific action to activate it. More significantly, her Crest is directly linked to the source of all other Power Crests, granting her the ability to use any power possessed by other users at will. This makes her an exceptionally formidable foe. Her development throughout the series reveals the layers of her broken psychology, shifting from a seemingly one-dimensional conqueror to a more understandable, albeit still villainous, character shaped by the trauma of being created as a tool for abuse and cruel experimentation.
