Description
Aryabahta is the princess of the Kingdom of Selinistan, a nation that discovered ancient, powerful artifacts known as Power Crests or Tattoos. Her origins are rooted in tragedy and cruelty; she was one of many children created through brutal experiments on a tribe of people who were descendants of the creators of the Power Crests. The king of Selinistan, who authorized these horrific experiments, eventually had a change of heart and raised Aryabahta as his own daughter. However, upon learning the truth of her birth and the genocide of her ancestral tribe, she developed a deep-seated resentment toward both the king and all of humanity.
Aryabahta presents a striking and dignified figure, carrying herself with the poise expected of royalty. Beneath this composed exterior lies a complex and often contradictory personality. She possesses an unequaled love for games, which can manifest in seemingly carefree challenges, such as playing ping pong with a rival for trivial stakes. However, this playful side starkly contrasts with her sadistic and cruel nature. She is a nationalist who seized power in a coup d'état that resulted in the death of her peace-minded parents, demonstrating a ruthless willingness to achieve her goals. She enjoys toying with her opponents, both physically and psychologically, gloating over captured enemies and cruelly murdering a protagonist's loved one to provoke him into seeking revenge, which she views as a weakness.
Aryabahta’s primary motivation is to remake the world according to her own vision. She has judged humanity to be at an evolutionary dead end and believes that the only solution is to use the power of the tattoos to overwrite reality itself, eliminating strife and war. Despite her cruel methods, she is driven by a twisted form of altruism, believing she is acting for a greater good and is willing to sacrifice her life for her goal of destroying the current human world. She views the power of the Tattoos as something that thrives on altruistic intent, which she feels justifies her actions.
As the primary antagonist, Aryabahta commands the Brahman, an elite unit of tattoo users, in her quest for world domination. Her key relationships are primarily with her subordinates, whom she treats as tools or toys. She has a particularly possessive and abusive relationship with Iltutmish, a girl who has pledged her absolute allegiance to her, and she is also attended by the sadistic R.R. Lurker and the loyal but easily frustrated Cal Shekar. Her role places her in direct opposition to the protagonist, Justice Akatsuka, whom she seeks to either recruit or destroy.
Aryabahta undergoes significant development as her backstory is revealed. Initially appearing as a powerful and capricious villain, her motivations become clearer when the history of her creation as a tool to control the Power Crests is uncovered. Her resentment towards humanity is shown to stem directly from the abuse and cruel experiments she witnessed and was a product of, which ultimately drives her desire to rewrite the world. This history frames her not simply as a power-hungry despot, but as a product of humanity's own cruelty.
Her notable abilities are among the most powerful in the series. Unlike most users, her Power Crest requires no trigger to activate. Her crest is directly linked to the source of all other Power Crests, which grants her the ability to utilize virtually any other power at will. She can create devastating energy blasts, manipulate the earth to form giant stone hands and impaling spikes, and generate a Void Maker that can nullify the tattoos of others, preventing them from activating. She also has the power to absorb energy from ancient tattoo ruins, which she can use to empower her followers like Iltutmish or generate hundreds of new, wild tattoos.
