Description
Mamushi Hōjō is a supporting character in the anime Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga. She is the eldest daughter of Uwabami Hōjō, the deep-section chief of the Kyoto Branch of the True Cross Order. She has two younger sisters, Nishiki and Ao Hōjō, who bear a strong physical resemblance to her. Mamushi is a Middle First-Class Exorcist assigned to the Kyoto Branch, specifically serving as captain of the deep section's first squad. She is twenty-four years old.

Mamushi has a distinct appearance, with very long white hair that reaches past her hips, yellow eyes, and blunt bangs. She also has snake-like scale patterns on her cheeks, though it is unclear if these are tattoos or natural markings. Her clothing typically consists of a yukata, and she is often seen with her hair tied in a ponytail. Her facial expressions and demeanor often convey a sharp, cunning, and somewhat disdainful attitude, particularly toward those she considers beneath her.

Personality-wise, Mamushi is proud, ambitious, and deeply loyal to her family's name and standing within the Order's hierarchy. She holds a strong disdain for the Shima family, a rival priestly bloodline, and frequently refers to them and their members as monkeys. This antagonism is especially pointed toward Juzō Shima, whom she has known since their time attending the same exorcist training school. She is not above using underhanded methods to achieve her goals, as she demonstrates when she conspires with Saburōta Tōdō to steal the Right Eye of the Impure King, believing that aligning with him will benefit her position and her family's influence.

Mamushi's motivations are driven by a desire to protect and elevate the Hōjō family's status within the True Cross Order. She holds deep resentment toward Tatsuma Suguro, the head priest of the Myōō Dharani temple, whom she views as incompetent and a failure in his duties. This resentment, combined with Tōdō's manipulation, leads her to betray the Order and assist in the theft of the Impure King's right eye. However, as the events of the Kyoto arc unfold, she comes to realize that she made a grave mistake in trusting Tōdō over Tatsuma. This realization marks a turning point in her character, forcing her to confront the consequences of her choices and her misplaced faith.

In terms of ability, Mamushi is a Buddhist-system exorcist who holds the titles of Tamer and Aria. Her primary combat skill involves the summoning and manipulation of snake-like familiars, known as nāga, which she can call forth by transforming her own arms. This snake motif is a recurring element in her character design and fighting style. She is a capable combatant, though her role in the Kyoto arc is more defined by her strategic and political maneuvers than by direct fighting. After the incident of the Impure King, Mamushi is removed from her position as captain of the first squad, a direct consequence of her collaboration with Tōdō. This removal represents a significant fall from grace for a character who was once a trusted and high-ranking exorcist within the Kyoto Branch.

Throughout the Kyoto Saga, Mamushi's key relationships are defined by family loyalty, rivalry, and betrayal. Her bond with her father and sisters is strong, and they work together as a unit. Her antagonistic relationship with the Shima family, particularly Juzō, is a recurring source of conflict. Her most significant relationship in the arc is with Saburōta Tōdō, who exploits her resentment and ambition for his own purposes. Ultimately, Mamushi's development in the Kyoto Saga is one of disillusionment and regret, as she learns that her pride and desire for power led her to align with a far more dangerous and manipulative figure.
